Adoptions & The National Western Stock Show

It's 10 degrees outside and snowing... yesterday morning's snow had melted by 3 p.m., and then it started to softly fall again - but it's intermittent, and very light and dry - the famed "powder" of the ski resorts. There's about an inch of snow on the grass, and about a half inch covering ice on the roads and sidewalks. I put on two layers this morning, plus my jacket and hat, snow boots and YakTrax and walked only 3 of my usual 5 miles... my knees hurt yesterday and all last night (whine, whine), and Aleve did not help...

Lovey caught herself a finch this morning, within 30 seconds of my opening the door. I'm both happy and sad to report that she broke it's neck immediately; I'm happy that she killed it quickly, so it didn't suffer, but I'm sad that she was able to catch it and kill it at the same time. But cats will be cats and only the strong and watchful survive... Banichi is now flinging the little corpse about on the patio and chasing it.

The lead story in the local newspaper is about how the local Horse Rescue Programs are being inundated with horses and ponies that people can no longer afford to keep with the current economy. It's very sad; and consider, too, the amount of dogs, cats, rabbits, etc. that are also going to Humane Societies and other adoption agencies... If you have the room, and can, honestly, afford the costs of a pet, please adopt through a Rescue or Humane Society!

The 2009 National Western Stock Show, Janaury 10-25th, is just around the corner! There are 43 ticketed events during the 16 days of Stock Show, including the PRCA Pro-Rodeo, PBR Bull Riding, Super Dogs, Wild West Show, Gambler's Choice, An Evening of Dancing Horses and more! The Livestock Shows include judging of alpacas, bison, cattle (70 breeds), goats, llamas, poultry, rabbits, sheep, swine and yaks. There are also dog shows and horse shows - all running concurrently.
*The high level of competition and world-class brought about by the state-of-the-art equine venue has resulted in more than 16,000 entries shown during the 2008 National Western Horse Show. The horse show includes one of the top-five American Quarter Horse shows, a six-judge American Paint Horse show and the famous Draft Horse and Mule Show. In addition, there are US Equestrian Federation-approved shows for hunters and jumpers, and an open division, which includes Arabians, American Saddlebreds, Appaloosas, Morgans and equitation classes.
*While most horse judging and other activities in the 5,000-seat Events Center may be attended with the price of general admission, there are 14 ticketed shows, including two Super Dogs events, two Wild West Shows and a pair of An Evening of Dancing Horses® scheduled in the arena. Ticketed horse shows include the $15,000 Dodge Invitational Freestyle Reining on Jan. 11 at 2 p.m., Gambler's Choice on Jan. 16 at 7 p.m., the $40,000 National Western Grand Prix presented Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. and four Draft Horse and Mule Shows over the final weekend, Jan. 23-25.
