Pathways through the woods and into the ravine show the layout of the Battle of Oriskany, fought in 1777. A direct ancestor of my husband, Jacob Gardinier, fought in this battle as described in the book "Drums Along the Mohawk." The Gardiniers were one of many Dutch families (even though the book says he's French) who settled in the Mohawk Valley of New York.
