If you are a responsible pet owner (or guardian - the official word in Boulder), your pet, animal, or charge (or in plurals) is up-to-date on its vaccinations. Please be sure that your pets' rabies immunizations are current - whether you own a cat, dog, horse, rabbit, ferret, whatever.... I know that on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, there have been at least 8 attacks made by rabid foxes - and I am also aware that many feral cats and dogs have died horribly in that area. Foxes, squirrels, bats and raccoons are carriers of this dreadful disease - I love all of these critters, and it's disturbing to know that there is the usual summer epidemic breaking out once more. Rabies is known in every country with large populations of mammals. Please keep your pets and your family safe.
Nothing much is going on here - this weekend I will start taking care of two new charges, a pair of 12-year-old cats, originally from Baltimore. Tugger is a very dark tabby, while Sasquatch is a handsome black guy. One has hyperthyroidism, while the other suffers from pancreatitis - so I'll be mixing meds into food and making sure each kit eats only their own food. These kits are about a block away from the Irish kids, so things should work out well. I visited my Lovey and Neddy yesterday evening, and let them go outside to play. About 8 p.m., Bridget, a new neighbor, tied Kitkat, her large cat, out on her patio. We both heard an awful howl, then Neddy and Lovey were inside my apartment looking out, while Kitkat had broken the buckle of her collar and was back inside her house. Bridget and I talked about it, and I offered to buy a new collar for Kitkat; we parted on good terms, and I took my kits back inside with me (they followed me back outside and over to Bridget's patio - it used to be Riley's, the Shar Pei's, patio).

Recognize These Guys?
Gossip...
We had rain last night - I opened the windows in the house and let the refreshing breeze blow through it. Rosie and Remy sandwiched me in bed, and seemed quite content. We walked to the grocery store this morning, sticking to the sidewalks after the rain. It's very nice out at the moment. The kits are back home - and exploring the apartment like it's some place new to them. Of course, I haven't used Fabulosa to mop the floor before, so maybe it's that... I'll head home and let them out shortly.
Abby Toll, who was convicted of felony animal abuse, is out of jail after serving 20 of her 30 days. She still has to serve 3 years probation, and perform her public service duties. And thank goodness her probation includes not being with or near any animals! ... Charlie Sheen, who attacked his wife with a knife on Christmas morning, plead guilty to assault charges in Vail yesterday, and got off with spending 30 days in rehab in California. What a cop out! ... Homer Winslow is a handsome grey colt; he was an early favorite for this year's Derby, but had a stress fracture in February. Now, in August, he has a condylar fracture. Too much stress, too soon on bodies too young. He's not a stallion I'd breed to, when he's retired. ... The West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer Park is scheduled for this Saturday - at least six graded Stakes winners will be in the running, as well as a couple of graded Stakes-placed colts. This years' field looks good!

Clean!!!
My apartment is absolutely, positively, sparkling clean. Well, the floor doesn't sparkle yet, but when I wax it next week, it will! I've already walked Rosie and Remy around Wonderland Lake this morning, besides watering the potted plants. We had a nice two hours of soft rain yesterday, which meant I didn't need to water the lawn. The kits are doing well - looking forward to going home, I think. I hope that I can return them to the apartment this afternoon - but, we'll see. It's up to the apartment management and the exterminators as to when they'll spray. It seems there have been complaints of roaches... I have a problem with India meal moths, and the kits eat most of the spiders. Other than that, the occasional earwig comes in under the sliding glass door - but I've never had a bug problem in my more than 4 years there.
Lookin at Lucky won the Haskell Invitational in grand style yesterday; and I was surprised when I saw how large First Dude is. I guess I had never seen him standing beside any other horses previously... Uptowncharleybrown had been the buzz name for an upset victory in the race, but he was scratched yesterday morning due to a fever. - And I was very happy to read that Dynaformer, the 25-year-old son of Roberto, is still getting almost 70% of his mares in foal. He is a very good stallion, and I wish him continued good health.

Thunderous Kitty Paws
Today is supposed to be another hot one - we actually achieved 93 degrees yesterday; but it was 58 degrees when I took the Rs for their early morning walk today. I don't walk the Gs today, so I'll still be working on cleaning my apartment to management's standards without any scheduled breaks. I have to remove more books, and then mop the floors. I plan on being finished soon. Then I'll kick back with a good book and relax until I get the word that I can move back in... Lovey and Neddy will be excited to be allowed back home - and it'll please me, too! Yesterday evening, the kits were chasing each other around upstairs, and their galloping paws were so heavy that it sounded as if the Rs were upstairs romping about.
Today is the running of the Haskell Stakes at Monmouth. Looking At Lucky and Super Saver are both entered in this Grade 1 event. ... It is expected that Zenyatta will next run the the Grade 1 Clement Hirsch Stakes on August 7; she has won this race for the past two years. And Rachel Alexandra's people have announced her next race as the Person Ensign Stakes at Saratoga on August 29. Maybe we'll get to see these two ladies face each other in the Breeders Cup this fall...
