Cool Morning!
Wow! I had to pull the blanket up to cover me this morning; it was 45 degrees outside and the humidity was at 65%. I had only taken shorts and T-shirts to Maggie's house, so I was a trifle chilly this morning walking to, and waiting for, the bus to come home and visit the kits. I read Alexy's book three times yesterday, and was still completely enchanted by it. Now I need to purchase another copy to give to Kennedy! I baked brownies yesterday afternoon, and after they cooled, I packed a third of them into a container and gave Alexy a call. She said to come right over, so I presented her with the brownies, and then produced my copy of The Cat Who Could Fly. Alexy's jaw dropped. She was amazed that I had found a good quality copy with a dust jacket after all these years - the book is out of print and was printed in England in 1970. She decided she wanted to write "a very personal note" to me when she signed it, so I left the book with her last night.
Lovey ran out into the hall the moment I opened the apartment door this morning - but she was easy to grab and hug and lug back inside. As soon as I sat her down, she ran to the patio door and wanted out, so I obliged. Then I fed Nedi and Mocha, cleaned the potties, took my meds, and sat down to catch up on my e-mail and all the news I'm interested in. Lovey came back then and wanted a pile of Party Mix to munch on, so I again obliged her. Most of the college teams that I root for won yesterday - with the exception of the Colorado Buffs; they were beaten soundly by Hawaii in their premiere game in their new league/division. I watched the Virginia Tech, Mizzou, FSU, Florida, and Colorado games. I think that I actually got my fill of football, for once. .... The dolphin that swam up Diascund Creek, off the Chickahominy River in Virginia, was found dead yesterday afternoon. Poor thing! ..... Havre de Grace beat the boys in yesterday's Woodward Stakes - she might have a shot at the Horse of the Year title. And Animal Kingdom, who won the Derby, and placed in the Preakness, has been cleared by his vets' to resume training. (It's been 60 days since he had surgery to repair a cracked left hock, which is presumed to have occurred in the Belmont.)
I have yet to see a day this year that there was not some snow on the Indian Peaks. While I was running around in my shorts and T this morning, other folks were in sweatsuits, or long pants and sweatshirts - and hats! I was chilly this morning - but a hat? Without snow on the ground and/or without a cold wind blowing? Maybe I'm still "running hot".... I don't know.

More Odds and Ends
We had some rain yesterday afternoon, along with thunder and lightning. The lightning ignited three separate wildfires near the Boulder city limits, but all three were reported quickly and were doused. I was supposed to go to a birthday party for Silver, the Weimareiner, yesterday evening - but forgot all about it. I was reading a new Midnight Louie mystery and enjoying Maggie's company. When I arrived home this morning, I found that my new sneakers and my copy of Alexy's book had been delivered after I left to dose Boo yesterday. I have glanced at the illustrations and a part of the story, and can't wait to sit down and read The Cat Who Could Fly. Lovey, Nedi and Mocha were all happy to see me this morning; Lovey wanted love, Nedi wanted to go out, and Mocha wanted food. I loved them all, opened the patio door, and fed them. Lovey hung around for a bit for more attention, then snacked and left. Nedi left, came back, ate, and then nursed on my right arm, before leaving again. Mocha has eaten from each plate, and is watching ESPN's College Game Day on the TV.
Versus TV will be showing the Woodward and the Forego Stakes live today at 5 p.m. (EDT). And in November, the Keeneland breeding stock sale will offer a half-sister of Zenyatta for sale. This bay filly's sire is HenrytheNavigator, and she is a weanling (photo by Joy B. Gilbert):
Here in Colorado, a 3 1/2 foot alligator bit a volunteer at the Denver zoo. The man was treated and released at a local hospital, with minimal damage done to his hand. Bob, the alligator, is often handled and is frequently used in "hands-on" shows at the zoo and at local elementary schools. Bob is not being held accountable for the battery. .... And in Roanoke, Virginia, visitors and workers are mourning the death of their 19-year-old male snow leopard, Boris, at the Mill Mountain zoo.

Poor Rosie and Remy!
With my disfiguring and nauseating spider bites yesterday, I didn't walk the red kids. (It looked like a had a navel orange under the skin of my neck, plus half an orange on my right cheek...) I heard late last night from the kids' real family that Remy started bleeding from his rectum yesterday - his anal glands were infected, and then he had an allergic reaction to the prescribed antibiotics. As they were taking Remy back to the vet, Rosie appeared on three legs. She wouldn't/couldn't place any weigh on her left front foot. No bones are broken, according to the X-rays, but she apparently got her foot slammed in the doggie door on her way through it. So I won't be walking the red kids until Tuesday. I really feel for them! It's not fun having a sore butt and a sore foot.
Gee, there was a 6.8 earthquake in the Aleutian Islands off Alaska this morning - I think Mother Earth is still having considerable indigestion. And our local news just interrupted programming to say that a 6.4 earthquake has just rocked northern Argentina. .... Hurricane Irene apparently got a 6-to-8 foot dolphin confused, as it has been seen for the past 3 days swimming around in Diascund Creek, a fresh water tributary of the Chickahominy River in Virginia. .... During the live coverage of Irene, a Fox-TV reporter from Washington, DC, was reporting from Ocean City, Maryland. He was being covered with wind-driven spume - foam from the frothy, wind-beaten sea water - and he reported that it tasted like the sea. A commentator in the studio stated that it was made up of "organic material." A New York Fox station picked this up, and reported that the Ocean City sea foam was contaminated with sewage. The Fox affiliates passed this story back and forth, all along the eastern seaboard. There was no sewage in the sea water or the ocean foam there at the beach at Ocean City. Fox News needs to apologize! .... The following is a photo of the worst of the storm damage that occurred on Chincoteague during Hurricane Irene's visit:

I was surprised to see a banner-type entertainment story today that yelled that an NCIS star was under arrest for felony battery. I simply couldn't see any of the main actors or actresses on my favorite show battering someone. So, of course, I clicked on the story and was (again) surprised to find that David Dayan Fisher, who has had a recurring role of ex-CIA/CIA agent Trent Kort, was a "star" of NCIS. Kort is a character that I clinch my teeth over, but I wouldn't designate him as a star of the series....
The kits have been delighted to have me at home for the past couple of days. Lovey isn't quite as clingy, and Nedi isn't as jumpy as he has been. Mocha laid beside me throughout the football game last night - and got lots of love and brushing and treats. The Broncos played last night, and all the first-string players got the night off. We were playing the Arizona Cardinals, and they started their first-string group. Brady Quinn, who seemed to be Head Coach John Fox's choice as the number-two quarterback, played the first half. Brady played extremely well in both the first and second pre-season games, but sat on the bench last week. Brady threw one interception, lost a fumble, was unable to make any first downs, and completed 4 of 12 passes for 26 yards. At halftime, the Cardinals were ahead 20 to 0, and the Broncos had a positive 48 yards of offense. Tebow was brought in for the second half. He made a couple of sloppy plays, but was able to move the Broncos down the field and to throw for a TD. Tebow completed 7 of 11 throws for 116 yards - and got us on the scoreboard. With less than 2 minutes left in the game, Adam Weber, the fourth-string QB was brought in. He moved the ball, in three plays, from the 6 yard line to 6 inches away from the goal. He threw one 89 yard pass, and scrambled 16 yards for the goal line with 2 seconds on the clock. He was stopped 6 inches away from the goal. - His three plays were the best of the Broncos' offense in the entire game! The final score was 26 to 7, in favor of the Cardinals.

It's a cloudy day here, at the moment, but we're expecting another record high to be set before a cold front moves down from Wyoming. We should be back to "normal" temperatures in the low- to mid-80s beginning tomorrow. The kits are running in and out, including Miss Mocha. They still hiss at one another, but now there are no claws out on Lovey. Jim, the maintenance man is mowing the lawn out back, and the kids go out when the sound of the mower is faint, and come rushing back in as it approaches the patio. It's kind of like watching a wave pattern at the beach....
There are still about 90,000 homes without power in Maryland and 180,000 homes in Virginia without power, thanks to Irene. Now the question is , what is Katia going to do, and what about that tropical depression in the Caribbean? The one in the Caribbean could put out the fires in Oklahoma and Texas, if it comes ashore in that area. .... There are wildfires burning in the Lakota Sioux Reservation in Wyoming and Montana. Outfits from 5 states are battling those fires.
On Saturday at Saratoga, Havre de Grace will race against 7 colts in the 1 and 1/8 mile Woodward Stakes. She has defeated all the fillies in her 3-year-old group, and her owners decided it was time to take on the boys. Sidney's Candy will take on 8 other colts in the 7 furlong Forego Stakes on the same day.
I'm getting ready to pay my rent, meet the new apartment manager, and pick up some bug traps from the office. People are complaining about roaches again. I've lived here for 6 years and have never seen a roach - though there are plenty of spiders, ants, and gypsy moths. - I was bitten twice by spiders early this morning; the areas around the bites turned bright red, burned like fire, and swelled up tremendously. I also became nauseated. I took a lot of Benadryl, canceled walking the Rs, and slept in. (Having been stung more than 53 times by yellow jackets on the head, face and neck when I was 3, I've had it drilled into me that any type of insect bite or sting above my shoulders is dangerous!) - Ah, well.... I have to remember to go and Boo her meds at 2 this afternoon!
