These myna birds eat insects off the antelope - there's one bird cleaning the inside of the critters' nose. These birds eat ticks, fleas and flies that hang around the antelope and are stirred up by its' grazing.

Home
Today has been very mild - it got up to 63 degrees - for January. I had a great walk with Rosie and Remy this morning - we met 6 new sets of dogs, and only had "trouble" with a pair of German Shepherds, who started barking and lunging at us when we were a block apart; we passed each other on opposite sides of the street to avoid a confrontation. Lovey spent last night plastered on top of me, while Nedi was glued to my side. In bed, last night, Lovey decided to sleep under the covers next to my skin. I had to laugh, because, when she emerged this morning, she spent at least 3 minutes cleaning each side of her face - eyes and whiskers. I guess I flaked too much skin under the covers last night...
We had a dog attack last week in Aurora; a woman was walking her small dog on a leash in an apartment complex at 6:25 in the morning. Two larger dogs, one black and one a brown brindle, without collars or tags, attacked the smaller dog together. The owner tried to help her dog and was attacked. A woman on her way to her car threw a blanket at the dogs - they turned and attacked her. A passerby was able to get the first woman and dog into her car, and call 911. A man came out to help the second woman, and was, in turn, attacked. The second woman was able to get into another vehicle, while the man jumped onto the roof of a van to escape the dogs. As police and EMTs were arriving, with their sirens blaring, the two dogs ran off. The man was treated and released from a local ER; both women, and the small dog, were hospitalized. (Of course, the first report was that the two attacking dogs were pit bulls.) Both of the attacking dogs were found, 24 hours later, beside I-470, both having been hit and killed by vehicles on the highway. Both dogs are now described as "large, mixed-breeds." - And, surprisingly, no one has claimed ownership of the two..... (yes, this last partial sentence should be read as positively dripping with sarcasm...)
I spent today tidying up my apartment - Nedi found a Knorr's chicken, rice, and broccoli package that I somehow left out, and he tore the bottom corner out of the bag, and then trotted around the house with it. I swept, then vacuumed, and finally mopped - I still smell chicken seasonings. I still need to do a couple loads of laundry to catch up with that chore. But it's nice to be home. I got to sit on my love seat, eat white cheddar Cheetos and sip Coke, and watch NCIS with Nedi next to me and Lovey draped across my chest. **Sigh** Such is home....

Rosie and Remy had a great walk this morning - other than the wind. When I awoke this morning, I couldn't decide if the sound I heard was the wind outside, or the heat in the vents; turns out it was both. Nedi and Lovey are very clingy, so I guess they will be that much more so when I get back this evening. I was able to give a lot of the family dinner food away to several needy families yesterday, so I feel better about that - I was afraid it would spoil and I'd need to toss it. Max and his family will get the brownies - I don't think that anyone ate them, except the two Kathy and I tried (to make sure they were good) when we were removing them from the baking pans.
We're supposed to be quite warm (60s) until Saturday, when another light snow is expected. I hope that it snows yards of the stuff over on the Western Slope - the ski resorts need it. Thursday we will have the Annual Denver Stock Show Parade in downtown Denver - herds of long-horns, riders, bands, floats, and clowns will liven up the day. The Stock Show itself will open this Saturday - for more information, please visit: http://www.nationalwestern.com/ . I can highly recommend all aspects of the Stock Show - I love to visit the show animals behind the scenes; the horse, mule, draught horse, and dog shows; all the 4-H stock shows; the vendor's exhibits; and to mosey around the food courts. There are book sellers, antique book sellers, fencing sellers, art and crafts artists, hat and boot makers stalls, ... just about everything anyone could want!
I was very excited to learn that Blaize Clement's seventh Dixie Hemingway book,The Cat Sitter's Pajamas, will be released today. I was greatly saddened by her death in July last summer. She wrote a very detailed outline and was able to write a few chapters of the eighth book before she passed away. Her son, who helped her with this new release, has agreed to write at least two more books in the Dixie Hemingway series.

Yesterday
I am being loved to death by Nedi. Lovey has come to me several times for attention, but Nedi seems to be in real need. I keep telling them I'll be home tomorrow evening, and that I'll be with them for 5 days before I take off again... Rosie and Remy both slept with me last night, and I need to tell Nancy and Joel that their automatic waterer has stopped working. (I took it apart, cleaned it, and set it up again, but the power converter box on the end of the plug is very hot to the touch, and the water is just not flowing...)
We had a super family gathering yesterday - between 25 and 30 people - plus 2 family friends. The big surprise came when Finn' family came home at the end of the party. They weren't due back from Vail until this afternoon, but there is no snow in Vail. So they came back while we still had two groups of family members and a friend in attendence. Everyone was in the process of leaving, so it was no big deal. But, Kathy and I then had to clean the kitchen, do all the dishes, and wrap all the left-over food - plus I had to get all my stuff together to go back home. I think the family got home about 6:30, and Kathy, Jim, and I finally left at 9 p.m. - Even though the family had eaten before they came home, they all ate some of what was still sitting out in the kitchen... I think we had enough food to feed 60 people without worrying about running short of anything.
Rosie and Remy's folks return to DIA about 4 p.m. tomorrow. I will make sure they've made it and are on the way home before I leave and return to my house. Then, other than daily walks, I'm home again until the 8th. Finn's family was going to go back and ski in Vail again during this week, but as the resort isn't expecting any snow until this coming weekend, they've decided not to go back. .... My kits are outside playing on the snow-free grass at this time. (And the Broncos lost, 7- 3, yesterday in a defensive battle - but since the Raiders also lost, the Broncos are in the Playoffs. We face the Pittsburg Steelers, in Denver, next Sunday.)

Have a Happy 2012!
I spent last night making pumpkin pies, brownies and corn pudding. As soon as I finish my blog, I need to run downstairs and make two quiche - one veggie (broccoli and mushrooms) with crust, and one bacon and cheddar without crust. Kathy will be heading over soon to put her ham in the oven, and help me decorate and set up.... There are 4 cases of mixed soda in the garage, two cases of beer in the pantry 'fridge, and the 4 bottles of white wine are also cooling (the reds are just sitting on their shelf). There are multiple cheeses, crackers, and bread, plus smoked salmon.... Plus whatever other folks - family and friends - bring. The Broncos play the Chiefs with a scheduled 2:15 kickoff time; the Broncos must win to make it into the playoffs. (No pressure, huh?)
