Where to start? What to say? The Dolphins defense couldn't stop Tom Brady and the Patriots - rats! And then the Broncos.... Well, I said before the start of the preseason that Kyle Orton can move the team from one end of the field to the other, but then he just can't perform when he gets into the "red zone." And that's what happened last night. The field at Denver was slippery, and Champ Bailey lost his footing multiple times as he tried to turn quickly or reverse his direction - and that was before the rains came. During the fourth quarter, after Kyle threw an interception, the fans in the stands started yelling, "Tebow! Tebow!" I honestly don't know if Tim Tebow could have helped the Broncos last night; I do know that the one glimpse that I had of Orton 'encouraging' his team mates seemed more like a tirade against them. As far as I'm aware, Tebow asks for everyone to work together, as a team, and takes the blame for any and all bad plays. Kyle Orton just doesn't cause a spark in, nor does he get a reaction from, his fellow team mates. I was disappointed. The Cincinnati Bengals visit the Broncos next Sunday. I hope we can get a win.
Remy was walking funny this morning - favoring his right hind, and once we were out on the pavement, that leg "gave way" on him twice, so we only had a slow 30 minute walk this morning. Rosie was totally gung-ho and ready to run and jog all the way around our usual path - but we retired early due to Remy. I didn't get to bed until midnight, with the late Broncos game (and with 30+ penalties), and Lovey decided I needed to get up at 5 this morning. It's amazing how a seven pound cat can make one feel as if her feet are digging six-inch-deep post holes into one's body with every step! Lovey plodded up and down my body, and on my sides when I turned over. She sat by my pillow and kept up a constant commentary for more than an hour. I finally decided that I wasn't going to be able to go back to sleep, and so I crawled out of bed at 6. Lovey is a rotten little witch. The moment I got up, she curled up in a ball and went to sleep.
It doesn't seem possible that Cliff Robertson is dead. He passed away the day after his 88th birthday. For me, he will always be Charly - and, occasionally, JFK in PT 109. And it's also a shame that we lost Andy Whitfield, the 39-year-old star of Starz' Blood and Sand: Spartacus. He was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma only 18 months ago.

Young Birds, and a Swagger

Lots and Lots of Birds
What a wonderful day of football yesterday! I had a blast! One of my teams lost, but everyone else won - and the Ravens made mince-meat of the Steelers. Hopefully, the Dolpins will beat Tom Brady tonight, and the Broncos will smash the Raiders... We'll see. .... My friend Bill rode his Harley in a remembrance tour for 9/11 yesterday in Commerce City, while my friend Larry rode his Harley in a remembrance tour up around Loveland. I had a quiet day with the kits, other than spending a few hours at Kathy and Jim's to give Boo her 2 o'clock meds and then all three girls their dinner. Kathy and Jim returned from their Alaska adventure this morning, and, as I haven't heard otherwise, I guess they had a good trip. Since they are back, I don't have to run back and forth twice and three times a day any longer.
Maybe it's because the young birds are fledging again... Lovey and Nedi have each brought me live young birds each day since Thursday. The birds have been scared silly, but they are alive, without any broken wings or other bones, and no visible bleeding. So I inspect each one and turn them loose out in the front yard.... I'm getting very used to having birds poop in my hands as I check them over. Mocha was in hog heaven with me on the sofa yesterday... She purred so much I thought she'd shake apart! Nedi just ignores her, but Lovey still hisses, and that makes Mocha howl and growl... Oh, well.... And a dog owner got angry with me (and the red kids) today: she had her dog off leash, which is against the law, where we were, and her dog threw itself at Rosie and Remy with great love and abandon. The only trouble was that it was a smallish, golden-colored thing, and both of the red kids were ready to eat it alive. They were so good for all of the walk, and then a half-block from home, they became my protectors. The loose dog kept dancing up to and away from, and in between Rosie and Remy. I kept shortening their leashes and telling them to sit, but the little dog kept lunging at them... it wasn't pretty. My dogs settled down, and sat, and the owner finally got her dog to go to her - but she didn't even have a leash with her. (Grrrrrrr.....)

Respect for Those Who Died
Ten years ago, a lot of good people lost their lives. They should be remembered with respect, tears and love. The majority of those who lost their lives had no idea that it was going to happen. An act of terrorism removed them from their normal daily lives. It was something that astonished America. We, America, the land of the free and the home of the brave, were attacked on our soil, using hijacked US airliners. It was unthinkable. It was as outrageous as the bombing of Pearl Harbor. It finally brought the idea of terrorists, which many other countries had been dealing with for years, home. I respect and mourn for all the innocents who lost their lives on September 11.
Prayer for Relief won the Super Derby yesterday; he led from the starting gate to the finish line. My pick, Trubs, finished seventh of nine. - But, Gung Ho, the son of Kitten's Joy, did win the Sunday Silence Stakes. .... And there was a dead heat in the Irish St. Leger Stakes: Jukebox Jury and Duncan finished together in the last Irish Classic race of the season. Duncan made it quite a day for his trainer, John Gosden, as Masked Marvel (also Gosden trained) won the English St. Leger 30 minutes before his stablemate won the Irish version.
Most of my college football teams won yesterday. The CU Buffs didn't; and it was a hard-fought loss. Most people remembered last year's 57 to 0 blow-out by California, and pretty much expected that to happen again. But the Buffs and the Golden Bears were tied at 33 when time ran out. California got a field goal that CU couldn't match in over-time, and so they lost a heart-breaker. And I loved seeing South Carolina beat the Georgia Bulldogs! Today I'll be rooting for the Redskins and tomorrow night, I'll be up late watching the Broncos. .... Enjoy your Sunday.

First Home Game of 2011
Today is the first home game for CU this season. I guess I over-estimated the California Golden Bears fans, as there are loads of tickets available, that were sent back by UC. Normally, with a 1:30 kick-off with a home game, Boulder is crawling like a huge ant pile stirred up with a stick; this morning, it's a sleepy little town, and the Harvest House Hotel, behind me is pretty quiet, too. Of course, this is a change in conferences for the Colorado Buffs - we're in new territory with new opponents coming here to Boulder, and with the Buffs visiting new collegiate fields. But I expected a higher turn-out of California fans today. I guess I'm disappointed. .... But since we aren't going nuts with tons of visitors, the kits can outside and play for a while this morning. Lovey has already caught and killed a bird - an immature youngster that was still a mottled brown-speckle cover all over. She brought it inside, placed it into an open, reusable grocery bag, and proceeded to remove half of its feathers - all over my new TV Guide. The bird was already deceased, so I allowed her and Nedi to play with it for about 20 minutes, and then I wrapped it in a plastic bag and deposited it in the trash. Lovey still has loose feathers stuck all over her fur.
I didn't have any over-nights scheduled until the first of October, but I received a call last night from Maggie May's owner, asking if I could take care of Maggie and the fish next weekend. Over Labor Day, both Darcie and her husband had visited their respective Fathers in Texas. Thursday morning, Darcie's father was walking across the kitchen and dropped dead on the floor. The Memorial Service will be next weekend, so I'll be at Maggie's again. I really empathsize with Darcie, as my father passed away in his sleep on September 10, 31 years ago today. .....
