Happy Mother's Day! My kits let me sleep in until after 8 this morning - Lovey did bathe both of my hands and washed my face twice, while she waited - but it was wonderful to be able to just sleep until I felt like getting up. It's still a grey and cloudy day out, and we're expecting thunderstorms this afternoon, according to the weather folks. It's not quite 50 degrees outside, and the kits are having a blast running in and out. On my way home from Kathy's yesterday, I came across someone getting ready to cut down and put a huge box into the recycling bin. I managed to get it home - for Nedi and Lovey to play in. Lovey just likes to jump in and out of boxes, use them hidey-holes, and use them for hidden attacks. Nedi likes to chew the boxes down to his preferred size - what ever that may be - he starts chewing (he doesn't eat the cardboard, he just rips it with his teeth, and spits the torn pieces out) at the box flaps and will sometimes gnaw away until there is only a partial panel left. This box is 3 1/2 by 2 1/2 by 6 feet.... it should take him quite some time to rip it apart...
There are 69 cats and kittens left for adoption at the Boulder Valley Humane Society, as of 9:30 this morning. Again, cats 6 months or older are free to a nice home, while kittens are adoptable at half of their usual cost. This includes a vet check, all vaccinations, spay or neuter and a microchip for identification purposes. This "special" ends today at the regular closing time. Please help these needy kits (if you can)!
And, if you are at all interested in your heritage, family tree, whatever you wish to call it - I highly recommend watching Finding Your Roots, a PBS show hosted by Henry Lewis Gates, Jr. - it shows here in Colorado at 7 p.m. (MDT). Tonight, the show will look into the backgrounds of three second-generation immigrants: Sanjay Gupta, Margaret Cho, and Martha Stewart. These shows are always interesting - and Dr. Gates is an excellent host!

Well, I was incorrect on two points in my blog yesterday - we were 40 degrees cooler, not 30, than Thursday; and I mistakenly reported that Black Caviar would run again on May 19th - she ran today, and won easily. She is now a winner of 21 consecutive races, is undefeated, and is heading for the Royal Ascot meet in Great Britain. The phenomenal mare races on the turf, usually at 6 or 7 furlongs. And, Gemologist suffered a bruised foot during the Kentucky Derby, so he is out of the Triple Crown hunt, too.
It's so cloudy that I can't see the base of the Foothills, or the Flatirons, that are less than a mile away. The clouds are that low and thick. I kept the kits inside most of yesterday, as there was a steady drizzle. The roads are damp, but it's not even misting at the moment. I've turned the kits out every morning lately with the admonition, "Have fun, but please don't kill any more bunnies." There are about six to eight baby buns bouncing around the complex - even though their total was reduced by one by my kits. Luckily, the poor thing's neck was expertly and instinctively broken at first bite (by Lovey), but then Nedi wanted to play with it. Lovey mistakenly brought it in to me, for me to adjudicate - I took the prize completely away from both of them, and buried it in the bottom of the trash dumpster.
Joel, the husband that owns Rosie and Remy, opened in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels last night to extremely good reviews (he plays the Police chief). Nancy, the wife, has her opening night on Thursday, May 17. ... Yesterday, I walked the red kids, then walked both Mona and Boo (without Kathy) before the rain started. The weather front had Kathy in one of her "out-of-it" phases, where all she can do is mumble and sleep, so I'll be headed back there this morning to get her hair washed and in a new braid. Jim is due home tomorrow night, and luckily, Mike's ankle wasn't broken, but is severely sprained, so he can drive the car to go pick Jim up from the airport on Sunday.
And I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the following programs this past week: on CBS; NCIS, Person of Interest, CSI: New York, and Blue Bloods; on NBC - Who Do You Think You Are?; and on PBS, Finding Your Roots. And, of course, I loved all the old Western movies and series on Encore Westerns.

101 Free Cats
The Boulder Valley Humane Society is inundated with cats and kittens. Therefore, today through Sunday (Happy Mother's Day!) all cats 6 months or older are available for free adoption, and all kittens are available at half the usual cost. The adoption means the cat or kitten has been spayed or neutered, has a micro-chip, has been checked by a veterinarian, and is up-to-date on vaccinations. If you can afford the cost of up-keep, and have the space, time, and heart to take in a kit that needs a life-time home, please do so.
In horse racing news, I'll Have Another is getting comfortable at Pimlico prior to the running of the Preakness on May 19th. Union Rags is skipping the Preakness, as is third-place finisher Dullahan. The slightly shorter course of the Preakness might be better for Bodemeister. .... Team Z announced on May 8 that an ultrasound has confirmed that Zenyatta is in foal to Tapit. She, and her colt by Bernardini, continue to thrive. .... Black Caviar, the sensational Australian race mare, won her last race, and is now 20 for 20. She is running again in the Goodwood Stakes, down under, on the 19th; then she will be heading for Royal Ascot, to run before the Queen.
A cold front came through last night, and today's temperature is 30 degrees cooler than yesterday. Yesterday, we were all in shorts and T-shirts, and sneakers or sandals. Today, it was long pants, sweaters, raincoats and boots... Weather in Colorado. You never know what will happen next.
