The first five Breeders cup races on Saturday include the two juvenile races, the turf and dirt sprints, and the fillies and mares turf race. (I'll write a bit about the last four races tomorrow.) You might notice the duplication of names in different races - besides being nominated by the breeder, the Breeders Cup also has other criteria, including graded stakes wins, amount of money earned, and points accrued in graded races. Some horses are double-entered to be assured they will be in one of two races that they prefer, if they don't meet the standards of one race. That is, sometimes there are so many qualified entries, that only the horses with the best racing history are allowed - which is also why the number of entrants in each race is limited to fifteen equines in the starting gate. (As with the Triple Crown, some owners with money want to be able to say their horse ran in a Breeders cup race. This set of criteria assures that the best of the best appear on track for the Breeders Cup.)
Again, horses denoted with an * are ones that have won a Breeders Cup Challenge Race and have won the right of a guaranteed post position.
