Chincoteague Surfers to the Rescue
Last Friday, as the huge nor'easter loomed over the east coast, Potomac School from McLean, Virginia, made a senior class trip to the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and Assateague National Seashore. Two members of the senior class decided to brave the surf, with a gale force wind blowing and dangerous riptides closing the beach. The two seniors were caught by the flowing water, and were rescued by five local surfers - Jordan West, Ray Wimbrow, Lee Kleckner, Bruce Sharp, and Frank Kern. Local Fish and Wildlife servicemen and women, as well as members of the Chincoteague Emergency Medical Services and the Volunteer Fire Company were on the scene. The two students were taken to Peninsular Medical Hospital in Salisbury, Maryland for treatment of exposure.
