Crazy, Crazy

This past Monday I wrote about a client who kept changing her mind.  In June, she made reservations for me to stay at her house for 5 nights and 6 days.  When I called nine days ago to verify, she told me she didn't need me at all.  Twelve hours later, she called and said she needed me for the last three nights; eighteen hours after that call, she told me she needed me for the entire, original reservation.  When I arrived, the daughter had not returned from the airport - she had run a few personal errands before returning her Mom's car.  On Thursday, the client called me and asked to to find a Certified Mail slip, and to go to the Post Office to pick up whatever it was, and to also check her friend's mail box at a different address.  I picked up the Certified Mail and had to sign my life away, as it wasn't addressed to me, then I traveled to the other house and grabbed that mail.
Friday, Bea and I rented a van and went shopping for a dining room set and/or a new sofa.  We found the dining set we wanted, and, as we were on the way to the warehouse to pick it up, my phone rang.  It was my client.  Her daughter had contacted her; the daughter and boyfriend were to have spent the weekend at Grandma's condo in Aspen.  When the daughter called the building to inform them she would be there for the weekend, the building manager told her the condo "was being shown" this weekend (for sale) and that they couldn't stay there.  Grandma has been threatening to sell the condo for the last 5 years, and apparently decided to do so without telling the kids or grandkids.  So the daughter would be back at the client's home that evening, and, once I had fed all the critters their evening meal, it was time for me to clear out.  And the daughter would pick the client up at the airport on Monday.
At nine o'clock last night (Saturday) I received another call from the client.  She had decided to come home today - Sunday - and thought her daughter would pick her up.  But her daughter had already changed her plans, and was going hiking on Sunday (today).  Could I come pick her up at the airport?  I got the flight information, and told her I would be there.  Then I stated that her car was very low on gas - should I fill it, and have her reimburse me, or should I drive the VW?   She told me that her car should have at least a half-tank of gas - I told her that it was on the one-quarter mark when I parked it Thursday, after going to the Post Office.  She said to drive the VW.
I checked this morning, and ascertained that her flight was on time, with arrival at DIA at 12:19.  Then I checked the Denver sports area, and found that the Rockies had a home game that started at 2:10, and the Bronco had a home game that started at 2:25.  I decided to leave a little early due to increased traffic; then realized I'd better drive the client's car rather than the VW, because the VW doesn't have a Toll Pass for the road to the airport.
I caught what was supposed to be the 10:07 RTD bus up to the client's neighborhood to get her car.  The bus was running 12 minutes late because the rear door kept sticking open - and the driver kept opening both doors at each stop, instead of only opening the front door.  So I was late reaching the client's house (in my mind's time table) - and the daughter called while I was walking to the house from the bus stop.  She realized that the client's car was nearly empty, and she needed to drive over from Longmont to get the car and put gas in it, and then she would come pick me up - OK?  I said, No.  I was almost at the house, I'd put gas in the car, and go pick up her Mom.  When I told her to enjoy her hike, she sounded completely lost, like she hadn't planned to go hiking...
In any event, I made it to the airport with 5 minutes to spare and turned the car over to the client, who dropped me off at home, after she paid me....   Crazy, crazy weekend.  (Both the Rockies and the Broncos won, by the way.)

Crushed - At the Bakery

Yesterday started off pretty well, and, I thought, went well.  Got up, had cereal for breakfast, fed my kits, cleaned their litter boxes, spent two hours on the computer checking e-mails and my schedules, plus looking at news and the few comic strips I read.  Then I put together a neighborhood wildlife watch bulletin about the recent incursions of prairie dogs in the Githens Acres neighborhood and sent it out to the 60 folks who receive it.  Set off for work and visited three homes, feeding and watering various pets, gathering news papers, watering flowers and plants.  Stopped by at Rosie's at our usual time, and took her out for a slow one hour stroll.  Got home just before noon, and washed and dried two loads of laundry, and swept and mopped the floor.
About three in the afternoon, one of my usual clients called and asked if I would feed her critters that evening.  I told her she had set up feedings, and walks for the dog, for Friday through Monday due to her meditation retreat schedule.  She had forgotten setting up the work...  Then she asked if her daughter had called, or sent an e-mail, regarding her arrival at Denver International Airport on the red-eye flight from LaGuardia.  I told her, no - it was the first I'd heard of it; the last I knew her daughter was here in Boulder.  The Mom insisted that the daughter was flying back "on her usual 1 a.m. Frontier flight," and begged me to be there to pick her up, because she, the Mom, had the meditation retreat and needed her sleep, plus wasn't supposed to speak to anyone until the retreat was over.  I agreed to pick up the car a little after 9, once I left Rosie's, and drive to DIA.  Then it was time for my afternoon rounds, so I went to three houses and fed and walked critters; then I went to the Mom's house and fed her animals; then on to Rosie's for a visit until 9 p.m.  After that, I walked over to the Mom's house, let the dog out for a few minutes, and then took the daughter's car to my apartment. I tried to take a nap before leaving for DIA, but I couldn't sleep.
My one thought through all of this was that I would treat myself to two doughnuts with chocolate icing for breakfast today, this morning, as I went over to the Jack Russells' house.  I got up, checked the DIA flight schedule and saw the flight from LGA to Denver was on time.  Due to road construction, I left the house with a 20 minute "cushion" in case of road blocks or traffic stoppages.  I arrived at the cell phone waiting lot 15 minutes before the plane was due to touch down, but I went inside to check the arrivals boards.  The flight was on-time.  I went back out to the car and began to read the book I taken along.  Twenty-six minutes after the plane was due to land, I went back inside and looked at the arrivals board again.  It stated that the plane had landed and where luggage could be picked up.  I went back to the car.  After another 15 minutes, I called the daughter's cell phone.  It went straight to voice mail.  I  left a message asking where she was, and telling her where I was.  I drove over to the Arrivals pick-up point, but there was no one in sight.  I went back to the cell phone lot, sat a few minutes, then call the Mom's cell phone.  It went straight to voice mail.  I explained where I was and there was no sign of her daughter.  I asked if the daughter's boyfriend might have picked her up?  I don't have his phone number...  I waited a bit more, and tried to call the daughter again.  No luck.
So I drove to the economy parking lot, and went inside the terminal.  The flight the daughter should have arrived on had already continued it's flight on to California.  There was no one waiting near the airline's area; there was no sign of the daughter in the rest rooms; there were no unclaimed bags from her flight.  I walked back through the arrivals area, but saw no one who looked remotely like the daughter.  I went out to the car, called the Mom on her landline number - and it went straight to voice mail.  I told her everything I'd done, and that I was driving back home and would return the car before 9 a.m, when I was due at my first job of the day.
Drove back to Boulder, arrived about 4 this morning - Beatrice was worried that I hadn't come home yet, and was still awake, since I didn't have the sense to call my room mate.  I got into bed at 4:10, and closed my eyes, promising myself chocolate iced doughnuts.  I got a recorded call from a telemarketer at 5:45  - and I'm on the National Do Not Call list.  I was not happy.  Then the Mom called me, in hysterics, asking where her daughter was, at 5:53...  I explained everything all over again, and she hung up while I was talking.  Apparently, she called the boyfriend, as she called me back at 6:20, saying that the boyfriend said she'd spent the night in NYC.  Mom was calmer, but still in a panic mode.  I was almost asleep again when the daughter called me from NYC, to tell me her side of things....  Her flight is tonight.  She will arrive at DIA Sunday morning at 1:04.  Kevin, the boyfriend, will pick her up.
Mom called me back to be certain I'd feed the critters and walk the dog today.  I got up.  I stopped at the bakery on the way to feed the Mom's critters - they did not have any chocolate iced doughnuts, they did not have any regular glazed doughnuts, and they did not have any sugar-sprinkled doughnuts.  I bought a blueberry bagel and fed the Mom's critters....   *sigh*  ....

Yesterday...

I don't know if I should laugh or cry over what happened yesterday...I had a great morning and early afternoon, switching back and forth between cleaning and family research. At 6 in the evening, I made my evening visit to Jasmine, and I picked up Lynn's Lexus in order to meet her at the airport when her flight arrived.  I came back home, first, and checked the Denver arrivals flight list, and saw that Lynn's flight was reading "On Time."  Her plane was due to land at 9:15, but the estimated time of arrival stated 9:10.  I checked the Denver International Airport flight list again at 7:55, just before leaving the apartment.  At that point in time, a small notice icon appeared next to Lynn's flight, and I looked at it.  It said that they had no confirmation that the flight had left at the specified time, and that (a) it might be running slightly late, (b) might have been postponed, or (c) that their server simply hadn't received the correct information regarding the flight yet.
Before going to Jasmine's, I had taken my cell phone from it's charger, and made a quick call, to verify that the phone was on and working.  I kept the phone in my back pocket to and from Jasmine's house. I laid the phone in the passenger seat beside me for the drive to the DIA cell phone lot, and left my place at 7:58, figuring 45 minutes to an hour for the drive to the airport.  I arrived at the cell lot at 8:45, and went in to check the Arrivals board...  and I was surprised to see that it said that Lynn's flight would arrive at 11:20 p.m.  I thought it was good that I had brought a book along to read, so I changed the parking spot to one beneath a light post, and opened my book. About every 15 minutes, or so, I'd check my phone.  I went back and checked the Arrivals board at 9:45 - and I stood staring at it for so long, that an older man asked if I needed help reading it.  I asked him to verify that I was reading the arrival time correctly for Lynn's flight - and he said, "Yes, ma'am.  It says it's on time and will arrive at 11:20 p.m."   I went back inside to check the Arrivals board at 11 p.m., and it still said 11:20 for Lynn's flight number.
Lynn usually calls me the moment she's allowed to use her phone after landing...  and then she calls from the baggage carousel, so I can meet her with very little wait time, at the pick up point.  At 11:30, when I hadn't received any calls, I started trying to call her.  I'd press her number, press call, and my phone would immediately say "Call Ended" as soon as it began to dial.  So I turned the blasted phone off and on several times.  It wouldn't let me make any calls - but it had worked fine at 6 p.m.  I "played" with it some more, pressing random buttons - then I tried to call Lynn again. The call went through, but put me into her voice mail after 6 rings... I left her a message that I was still sitting in the cell phone lot and was really becoming concerned about her.  I ended that call, and made another to a friend I know is always up late.  We talked for a few minutes, and then I turned the phone on and off again.  Now it said that I had 20 missed calls and 12 voice messages.
Lynn's flight had arrived at 9 p.m.  She called me several times and left messages.  She then called a neighbor to see if her car was at home (which it wasn't).  She called me again.  She was becoming more worried and more agitated.  At 10 pm, she left a voice message saying she was taking a cab home from the airport, and hoped that I was safe and sound.  I listened to all of her messages, and then tried to call her again - she picked up her phone at 12:05 a.m.  I told her I was still waiting for her call, sitting in the cell phone lot at DIA.  She laughed until she cried.  We then exchanged stories, said, "Good night," and I drove back to Boulder.  She had arrived at home, in a cab, at 11:25 p.m.  I arrived at my apartment, still driving her car, at 1:05 a.m.
And I was up and going at 5;45 this morning, as usual....  We still don't know what happened with my cell phone...   We can't figure out why 3 other people, besides me, verified that the Arrivals board stated her flight would arrive at 11:20 (when it had arrived at 9:00)....
We agreed that what with sun spots, solar flares, and some kind of hinky magic, we had been visiting The Twilight Zone.

Friday's Adventure

We received more than an inch of snow Friday morning before dawn, and the temperatures never rose above freezing.  I wouldn't have minded any of that, except that I traveled down to the Denver Airport with a family in their car.  I was assured they would leave in plenty of time to make their check-in and boarding.  I was told they'd pick me up at 7:30, and once they had debarked at the airport, I could drive peacefully back to Boulder.  They arrived in my parking lot at 8:15, and the roads were covered with slush, which was coating the windows and windshield, as well as the rear window.  The morning soon turned into an adventure - first, while the owner was driving, and we were only 10 miles out from Boulder (it's 75 miles from the house to DIA), we ran out of windshield washer fluid.  It was decided, since they were running so late, that we'd just dash water (from the personal water bottles everyone was carrying) onto the windshield and use the wipers to clear a vision spot.   Let me tell you that I found the experience frightening - firstly, the driver decided to try this operation at 85 mph on the toll road, and, secondly, we couldn't see anything behind us because the rear window was completely coated with mud, salt, and slush.  The first try blew the water onto the roof, missing the windshield entirely, due to our velocity.  So we began stopping in the emergency lane every  5 or 6 minutes to splash water on the windshield - but (I was praying at every stop) we couldn't see if anything was behind us when we started to stop, or how close the vehicle was, because of the totally occluded rear window.  So the driver started chiding the son for returning the vehicle without it being filled with gas and washer fluid.  The son reminded the driver that the daughter had taken this particular vehicle out, not he....  It was an interesting drive....  We somehow managed to cover the 75 miles in 55 minutes.
Then I got to drive back to the closest service station and convenience store to purchase washer fluid and fill the reservoir that is used for both front and rear windows.  The vehicle took in 1.5 gallons of washer fluid.  I then washed all the windows with the provided window washer and scraper.  On the way home, I decided that I did not want to be driving in that bumper-to-bumper Interstate traffic all the way from DIA back to Boulder.  (Dumb idea.)  I took Tower Road to 96th Avenue - and then waited for 90 minutes with a train blocking the road.  I finally pulled out of line, and decided I'd see the "back side" of Commerce City.  I had no map, so I was just zig-zagging west and north, in hopes of finding a road that I knew.  I found three dead-ends, but finally saw a sign that pointed to one of the main roads (there are only three) back to Boulder.  It was quite an educational drive, and I actually rather enjoyed the adventure...
Yesterday and today are gray and yucky.  Originally, the weather folks said we'd be cloudy, but there would be no precipitation during the Broncos game.   Now it looks like we'll have rain, possibly sleet, and possibly snow during the second half.  At least I'll be snug inside and watch the televised game from the recliner!  -  And I had really wanted the Ravens to beat the Patriots yesterday, but it just didn't happen.  So sorry, Baltimore!

Odds and Ends

Well, let's see what's going on today...  The Boulder County Fair ends today and so does the Denver Arts Festival. It is sunny out this morning, but we've been warned to expect cloudy skies and thunderstorms after noon.  Boulder is congratulating itself regarding because the Boulder Ironman was a success - and the first person across the finish line (in 8 hours 20 minutes and 56 seconds) was a Boulder resident.
Tugger isn't very happy being left alone in the house during the workday - he is giving his male owner what-for most of the night, even though I'm visiting two or three times a day.  Luckily Kristin will return this evening and he'll have his "Mom" home again.  Tessa seems to be doing well with my care - we're walking three times a day (at least) and she's playing off-leash very happily.  Rosie is my next objective - I start caring for her at 9:30 this morning; and I add Cyrano and Pounce on Tuesday.
Lovey was thoroughly entranced by a video on Facebook this morning - someone had set up a camera to see if their dog was getting on the bed while they weren't at home.  The cat was sitting on one corner of the bed and the dog jumped up and wriggled and rolled all over the bed.  Lovey found it fascinating...
There are 37 large wildfires burning out here in the West - thankfully, none of them are burning in Colorado at this time.  I'll be seeing that crazy blue horse statue at the Denver airport on both Tuesday and Wednesday - taking Ba and Bob to the planes on Tuesday, and picking Lynn up on Wednesday.  I'm becoming very familiar with all of the construction zones along the highways between Boulder and Denver.
The west coast of Florida will be affected by a huge Red Tide within the next two weeks - It's expected to cover the coast from Tampa Bay up into the Panhandle.  The algae bloom is 80 miles long, 50 miles wide, and was at a depth of 131 feet on Friday.  That's going to cause a big die-off of fish and marine life, as well as impacting the tourist trade.  Get ready for the Red Tide, Florida!  (And it ain't 'Bama's Crimson Tide, either!)
A fantastic find of prehistoric bones is being carefully re-dug in Wyoming.  The Natural Trap Cave was first found in the 1970s, and, now, with the advances in science, the bones are being sent out to various universities in the US and Australia, to study the DNA found in the bones and some of the still attached tissue and ligaments.  I'm looking forward to the findings!
Today, the big news in Colorado is that a single winning PowerBall Lottery ticket was sold in this state, in the town of Rifle.  The Kum and Go gas station/store sold the only winning ticket, and it's the only one that's ever been a winner in Colorado.  It's a "first," according to the news.
Tonight is another Super Moon night - hopefully your skies will be clear this evening and tonight for your viewing pleasure!
