Bits and Pieces

If you want, or need, a good laugh - and can stand to read a lot of incomplete sentences that were uttered by the current President - please read (and guffaw, as I did) the following new article, or interview, from Time magazine:   http://time.com/4710456/donald-trump-time-interview-truth-falsehood/
There were six late additions to the Triple Crown nominations list, so the current list of contenders now registered is 425.  A horse must have a certain number of qualifying points to run in the Kentucky Derby, which is capped at 20 entries.  Other horses that are nominated, but do not have the points, may race in the Preakness Stakes and/or the Belmont Stakes.  The newest nominees are: Thunder Snow, Hollywood Handsome, More Than Words, Parlor, Rapid Dial, and Stretch's Stone.
The wind is picking up again, here in Boulder - it's from the west and is expected to bring a rain-snow mix overnight and into Friday morning.  We really need the rain, snow, sleet - whatever precipitation we can get.  I just hope there's no hail - gardens are blooming and trees are budding and putting out fresh delicate leaves right now.  I'll pull our potted plants back in from the balcony this afternoon.
It has been judged that the Sunshine Canyon fire was started by an illegal campfire by people trespassing on private property.  The fire investigators state that the camp appeared to have been used by "transients."
And Joe Pelle (our Sheriff) announced that a body has been found on one of the local hiking trails... currently, no further information is available.
I am still grieving the loss of Rosie, the Irish Setter, whom I cared for over a period of more than ten years.  We lost Remy, her brother four years ago...   And I'm preparing to say good-bye to a beautiful cat who has bone cancer in her jaw. She seems to be in quite a bit of pain and is no longer eating - but she will drink... so I've suggested that her owner give her chicken bone broth for some nutritional value.
My two kitties are doing well.  Lovey is curled up in her little nest beside my bed, and Nedi has burrowed under the afghan on my reading chair.  Lovey is napping - Nedi is keeping an eye on the birds visiting the feeder and water bowl on the balcony...
I hope you have a great day, wherever you are - and whenever you read this!

Finn and Other Things

It's been a wild and wacky few days…   Beatrice and I have been decorating our balcony with lights, which has caused Nedi to have great interest in the wires.  We have three strands of indoor/outdoor lanterns shaped like hot air balloons in five colors, along with five strings of both multi-colored and white LED lights.  The ballon run on alternating current, and are plugged into the (covered) balcony outlet; the LED strings run on batteries, and I have their power packs taped up under the balcony railing frame.  It looks good - I just hope it can withstand the winds that we get.  I wired the balloon lights to the balcony rails, and wove the LEDs through the balloon wires….  We'll have to see what happens.
Finn had the sutures removed from his tail Thursday afternoon.  The stub was still covered with rough scabs, so it was decided to bandage his tail again, until another follow-up visit and vet check on Tuesday.  His owners will take him in that day.  Finn has been very good about going places with me - always happy to get in the car, and happy to get out.   However, if we go somewhere other than his own yard, he sticks right by my leg - no roaming and wanting to explore as he did before his accident.  I'm hoping that will come with time.  He still loves everyone he meets, but he's not an explorer any longer.
Thursday afternoon, after Finn's vet visit, I had to make a quick run to the grocery store for one ingredient that I didn't have for a recipe.  Upon my return, as I pulled up to the gate, I saw an older woman sitting on the tree stump beside the drive and a young man, still a-straddle his bicycle, leaning over the lady.  The woman was in a jogging suit, and was very pale, and holding the side of her forehead.  I turned the car off and asked if I could help in any way.  Neither one of them answered me, but looked at each other.  The lady, Maggie, had been doing a slow jog and suddenly fell down, hitting her head on the sidewalk.  The young man had seen her fall, and had stopped.  I offered to call 911, or an ambulance, or anyone for Maggie.  She stated she  had already called her daughter, who was on her way.  Maggie looked teary, she had broken the lens out of her glasses, she was very pale, and had scrapes on her temple and cheekbone, as well as a bump the size of a large lemon on her forehead.  I asked her if she'd like to go up into the house to wait - her daughter could drive right up, as I'd leave the gate open.  Maggie refused.  I offered water or an ice-pack, anything I could think of that might be of comfort.  She accepted the ice-pack.  The bicyclist stayed with her while I ran up to the house.  I got a bottle of cold water, and a soft, round ice-pack from the freezer.  The young man left - continued his afternoon ride - when I returned.
Maggie first took a small drink of water and then applied the ice-pack to her forehead, occasionally shifting it to her temple and cheek.  She was still shaky and teary.  This was Thursday afternoon, remember.  She told me she had been jogging down 4th Street on Tuesday, two days previously, during a time when we were having high winds.  Two blocks to the south of where she fell Thursday, a big tree limb fell from a tree and knocked her to the ground, striking her head and shoulder.  The limb had caused a bloody knot on her head two days before, and now she tripped and fell, banging her head again.  She also had new scrapes on her elbow and knee, joining the already scabbed places from Tuesday.  I was worried about a concussion, or, possibly, two, since she didn't seem to be able to keep her eyes focused on mine.
When her daughter arrived, I told them both that I'd had multiple concussions in the past.  I ran through the concussion protocols that had been pounded into my head for both of them.  I told her that I wasn't licensed in any way, but I felt Maggie really should be looked at by he own doctor, or seen at an Urgent Care or Emergency Room - especially since this was the second blow to her head in two days.  They listened to me, thanked me, and headed for home.  They also invited me over for tea, at any time. I just hope that Maggie is fine.
This morning, having taken Finn out for a long walk, we headed back home.  He likes to drink in the reflecting pool in his yard, so I turned him loose when we got back inside the gate.  He was running along in front of me, wagging his tail like mad.  I suddenly saw the puffy blue end of his bandage fly one way, while the flesh colored wrap started to unwind from his tail.  I let him drink his fill, having gathered up the two parts of his bandage.  I called the vet when we got back inside the house.  We jumped in the car and went to the vet's and had Finn's tail re-bandaged.  Thankfully, his folks will be home tonight.

CVFC Spring Round-Up Today and It's Nedi's Birthday

I love my little black cat.  He was born in Kansas six years ago today, according to the Boulder Valley Humane Society, where I adopted him.  He was a nine-week-old kitten and already neutered when I brought him home.  Lovey had been looking for her "brother," another adopted cat, frantically since one of the neighbor's poisoned him.  I brought home several adult cats, but Lovey hated them all.  I finally decided to get a kitten that she could raise to her lofty standards....  And so the small black kitten came home with me.  The previous cat was named Banichi, after an ateva assassin/body guard/lawyer from the Foreigner series.  Since the kitten was black with blue eyes (though I knew they would soon change), I named the little boy Zephraim (after Glenn Corbett's portrayal of Zephram Cochran in the original Star Trek) and after Cenedi (pronounced Keh-ned-ee), an older, wiser ateva assassin/body guard/lawyer.  He has fully lived up to both namesakes.

And today is the first day of the Chincoteague pony Spring Round-Up for the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company.  The Saltwater Cowboys plan to commence rounding up the stock in the southern compartment of the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge at 4:30 this afternoon.  While the Cowboys are rounding up the northern herds (on the Virginia end of Assateague Island) tomorrow morning, the veterinarian checks, vaccinations and hoof trimming will take place for the southern herds.  Tomorrow after, the same checks, shots, and care will happen to the northern herds.  At some point in time Saturday, the weanling - almost yearling - Buy Back foals from 2015 will be turned loose to mingle with the southern herds.  It will be interesting to see who joins which group.

Snow!

Weather-wise, Boulder has had a great few past weeks.... Highs in the 60s and 70s (F), breezes, no rain.  But that's also a problem because we are an arid area, up against the mountains.  The snow pack, which we depend on for water during the Spring and Summer, has shrunk greatly.  We are getting a respite from the dry weather over this next week.  After a week of warmth causing me to pin my hair up, the snow began falling at six o'clock this morning.  The snow melted as it struck my face on the way to the bakery this morning, and I could see wet spots from flakes on the sidewalk as I walked home.  The grass in the back yard is now covered - and the squirrels are looking wet and raggedy.  I put out extra nuts and dried fruit for the squirrels this morning, as well as seed for the birds - and I will do so again tomorrow.  The weather guys say we'll get between 3 and 17 inches of snow by tomorrow night.  I'd rather just have rain - but we need the moisture, so I'm not complaining.
I returned the books to the library yesterday, but I didn't have time to pick up any more to read...  I'll make do with old favorites here at home for the rest of he week and weekend.  I closed all the open windows on the chicken coop at Dellwood last night, not knowing whether we'd get rain or snow - or when it would start.  I've let the hens out this morning, and, besides their scratch, gave them broccoli and sweet potatoes.  They have a sheltered area at the front of their coop, and there are several other places they can seek refuge in around the yard, so I'm not worried about them.  (It might be hard to round them up this evening - but that's later...)  I decided to leave Carter and Xuxa in the house today, so they're a little upset with me.
Lovey and Nedi stepped out onto the patio this morning, then came back inside.  That's normal for Lovey, but odd for Nedi.  The poor little boy has a nasty head and nose cold - he really likes slightly warmed broth, and it helps him get rid of nose congestion, so he's getting the royal treatment.  Since he's not feeling his best, he's been snuggling as much as possible - so I have him on one side of me and Lovey on the other anytime I sit down or lie down...  It's very comforting and nice - except when Nedi begins a sneeze string that lasts for more than three minutes.  Then it's wet and messy; but he's my little boy, and I love him no matter what.

More And More Snow

Our snow began to fall yesterday morning around 10:45.  We've been so warm that it didn't even start to accumulate on the grass and roadways until after 4 in the afternoon.  It's still snowing.  There were five inches of snow on the ground when I got up at 6 this morning, and the white stuff is still falling steadily.  Our weather folks say that Boulder will receive another 3 to 8 inches of new snow today.  That's fine with me!  I've gone to the store, fed the squirrels, fed the birds, cleaned the litter boxes and have taken the trash and recycling out.  I'll be checking up on male family names in both the Snow and Nocks families, to give a list to Mike and Erin.  I had understood that they were going to name their son after their Uncle Kent, who passed away in September.  That is not the case, now - I have the feeling that Vanessa, Kent's widow, wants to name her first grandson after her husband...
Nedi ran out into the snow and bounded around for a while this morning.  Lovey stepped onto the patio, sniffed the sir and walked back inside.  The veterinarians keep telling me that I overfeed my cats.  Nedi has a small frame and only weighs 6 pounds; Lovey had a medium to large frame and weighs 11 pounds.  Each and every day, they have three bowls of dry food to choose from, a small bowl of treats, and a can of meat and gravy; there are two full water bowls, and one that flows constantly.  Last night I kept hearing odd noises from the kitchen cabinet, so I peeked around the room divider to check it out.  Nedi was inside the cabinet.  He very carefully patted a full box of elbow macaroni out of the cabinet and onto the floor.  He then proceeded to chew the corner of the box open, spitting tiny pieces of cardboard out, as he removed them.  Once he had a hole large enough for his paw to fit inside, he reached in and scooped out five pieces of macaroni.  He then ate those five pieces, pulled out another five, ate three of them and just wandered away.  Now I know that I do not have a mouse in the pantry; it's my little black cat.  I'm just puzzled as to why he wanted to eat wheat pasta pieces....
I've seen one intrepid squirrel out this morning - he kept disappearing into the snow as he leapt his way from the fence to the patio.  I placed walnuts and pecans out for the furry kids this morning.  I have only seen a huge flock of starlings out and about in the feathered friends area...  and I placed sunflower seeds out for the birdies this morning.  Both cats are intently watching the squirrel and birds eat.

Cold!

The big news here is still the cold.  We (the city/area) have set four cold temperature records in the past three days - that is, since temperatures began being recorded here, in the 1870s.  Records were set for the lowest high temperature on Tuesday and Wednesday, and the lowest low temperatures for Wednesday night, and this morning - which was -14 degrees.  Luckily, Nedi decided it was a little too cold for him to stay outside this morning - he ran out, hunkered down and ran right back inside.  Lovey did the same.  There are three squirrel tracks in the snow, but I don't know how many were here visiting yesterday.  The walnut stash did not diminish much, I know.  And the small birds are having a ball with the bird seed bowl I put out - lots and lots of juncos, sparrows, finches, chickadees, and a few jays are visiting.  This morning, even though it's so cold outside, the sun is shining, so I have the thermal curtains that cover the patio door and windows open about half-way.  This way, the sun shines in and gives the kits a sunny spot, and we can see the critters coming to feed.  Nedi has started to squeak at me because he wants to go out and nab a new friend, but I just keep telling him no....

Zephraim Cenedi is Four Today

Today is Nedi's fourth birthday - he has grown from a handful of black fluff that I adopted at the age of 9 weeks, to a big ball of black fluff with a penchant for chasing his sister.  Zephraim Cenedi looks like a very large cat, thanks to a very full and fluffy coat; actually, he weighs about 6 pounds - half the amount of his "sister", Lovey.  Small-boned, extremely active, and having a personality that enjoys interacting with other cats, birds, and squirrels, Nedi is a bundle of joy.  And, like any brother, he knows precisely what to do to get his sister to lose her cool - and it's kind of fun to watch him plot things to do to his sister.  He doesn't stare at her, but he gives these measuring glances, and then looks away to plan his strategy.  I bought a special dinner treat for them both, and will do the same when Lovey's birthday comes back around...

It was so marvelous to sleep in my own bed last night.  I'll have to watch The Blacklist on line this week, as I collapsed in bed last night when Kathy brought me home, after answering my collected e-mail.  We had wind off and on throughout the weekend and yesterday. Today the sun is shining in a bright blue sky and it's all of 35 degrees out.  I've taken care of my kids and fed the squirrels walnuts for breakfast.  I think that I will just laze around today - read and do some genealogy research, but not push anything.  Spending 24 hours at home, without needing to go out and do something, seems a wonderful thing, these days.
