Horses and Churchill

It never rained here yesterday... It's very overcast again today, and we're being told not to expect any precipitation; maybe there will be some showers Saturday and Sunday afternoon. I didn't feel well yesterday afternoon and laid down with the kits at 4 p.m. - didn't get up until 6 this morning! I guess I needed the sleep. There were fewer birds and squirrels visiting yesterday, and I haven't seen any so far today. Kathy and Jim's apple tree, by the patio, has a knot hole in it and a pair of chickadees are busily building a nest there. The kits have run in and out a few times this morning, but don't seem to have a particular liking for either...

Horse hair thieves have struck in Boulder County - they got the tail of a black mustang earlier this week. The gelding's tail swept the ground, and it was cut off in bang-tail style immediately under the final vertebrae. He's a pastured horse, and will have a devil of a time keeping the flies away for the next few years. ... An Englishman, who passed away in Connecticut, left 250 pounds for his family to bet on a 100-to-1 long shot in the Grand National Steeplechase at Aintree. He asked that 8 different relatives post the bets with different bookies, so that the odds wouldn't be driven down. The family thought it was a lark, but did it last weekend. The 100-to-1 shot won, and the family garnered 250,000 pounds - thanks to their deceased relative.

The University of Colorado has now stated that they will fight any call for the reinstatement of Ward Churchill. They say that 3 separate committees, consisting of 20 different professors, found that Churchill was guilty of "repeated and flagrant academic misconduct" and that his return would show that CU supports falsifying research. Monday Churchill had said that if he were offered his job back, he would have to take into consideration whether CU still met his academic standards, or "had it fallen into the slot of a vo-tech institution." Today, in a New York Times interview, Churchill says his statements were taken out of context, and that all he wants is to be restored to his position at CU.
