The following photos were taken by a man named John Thomson in Victorian London during the early- to mid-1870s. These photos were originally published in a magazine titled
Street Life in London in 1876 and 1877. Today, the auctioneer group of Dominic Winter sold, at public auction, a book with 36 photographic plates taken by John Thomson. The book sold for a little less than $16,000 - or, for 10,500 pounds English.
Thanks to NBC news, here are a few of the photos, with their original titles:
Crawlers
Wall workers
Cheap fish St. Giles
Street advertising
Covent Garden laborers (left); Covent Garden flower women (right)
The Street doctor (left); The London sandwich man (right)
