Bits and Pieces

A fourth dead humpback whale has washed up on the Virginia shore today - this time on the beach of Assateague Island, on the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge.  A necropsy team is on the way.  It seems really odd to me that we're having this spate of humpback bodies in a period of less than 35 days.  I hope the scientists can figure out what is causing the deaths of these magnificent creatures.
Tonight, Cheeto Voldemort will address a joint session of Congress.  I've decided not to watch this live - his almost constant use of incomplete sentences drives me crazy.  But MSNBC is holding a special late-night Hardball episode at midnight on the east coast - 10 pm here - and I'll be watching that.  The comments of Chris Matthews, Rob Reiner, and Bill Maher will be killers, I'm sure.
Let's see - after the 8 inches of snow last week, some of which is still on the ground, we're expecting more snow this afternoon or evening.  The cats really wanted out on the balcony yesterday - it was bright and sunny - but the lady who lives above us doesn't clear her balcony of snowfall, so there was a constant shower of snow melt out there.  Both Lovey and Nedi went out, but they didn't stay long when they realized their was a cold shower from above.
I had the weirdest dream the other night:  I was in a large bedroom, and I heard a big thump from the next room.  I looked out into the hall way, and my friend Beatrice came running out of door and into the hall, yelling, "Flitch back board and split green beans!"  I woke up because it was so weird, and the words made no sense.  I actually wrote the words down so I could ask Beatrice about them when we got up.  Of course, they were nonsense to her, also.
A pigeon just flew past my window with a bunch of dried grasses in its beak.  I guess it's time to start nest-building around here.  There are three eggs in the bald eagles' nest on Assateague Island.  I'm looking forward to watching them hatch and then fledge. (They're on an eagle-cam feed.) Usually two of the three hatchlings will survive, so we will hopefully continue to help regenerate the species.
I finally had my hair chopped off Sunday.  I had let it grow out for 3 years, since my sister's cancer diagnosis, but my hair is very fine and it seems to tangle instantaneously.  I'd spend 45 minutes getting all the knots out before I went to bed, and then have to do the same thing in the morning when I got up.  I tried putting my hair in one large loose braid, and in two braids, to sleep in, but I couldn't get comfortable enough to sleep.  So I donated 15 inches of grey hair to make wigs  for folks with cancer.  And now, my hair is standing up like a cockscomb across the crown of my head...  I just laugh.

My Arm Opened Like a Giant Banana Peel....

I had one of my really strange and vivid dreams this morning.  I don't know where I was, but I had glanced down, and noticed what I thought were movements under the skin of my right wrist, on the side where the thumb joins the hand.  I kept watching my wrist, and saw more movement under the skin.  I started poking at the movement, and trying to stretch the skin around, not really expecting anything to happen.  A teeny, tiny slit appeared in my skin, and a small greenish head with two dark brown eyes looked out at me, blinked, and then disappeared back into my arm.  The slit disappeared and the movement I thought I had seen ceased.  Wow, I thought...  there's an alien living inside of me.  A few days passed, in the dream, and then I saw more movement under the skin of my wrist.  I visited my sister, and told her what I had observed the other day - she told me I was full of manure, but using a much shorter word for manure.  I insisted  that I wasn't lying to her, and she refused to look at my arm to see the movements under the skin.
I began poking and pulling at the skin on my wrist as I had done before.  I had to show my sister I wasn't insane.  After a few minutes, things started to move under the skin of my forearm - and my sister say it.  She was dumbfounded.  I kept pushing and poking at the area where the slit had appeared the last time, and it finally began to open up...   At first it was only a couple of inches long, and my sister said, "Oh my God..." as a pale greenish shield-shaped head slid out of my arm.  The nose was the bottom point of the battle-shield shaped head, and the eyes were dark and shiney and placed about two-thirds of the way up the sides of the shield.  Between the eyes and running in a thick mane down the long thin neck were tubular tentacles in bright scarlet and neon blue that pulsated and waved about as if they were separate entities from the lizard itself.  What was even more frightening, to me, was that with exposure to the atmosphere, the lizard was suddenly doubling, then quadrupling, then exploding into a huge size.  As this became apparent, my arm opened like a giant banana peel and five of the creatures appeared.  I remember being surprised that my arm didn't hurt at all - that it just felt as if some kind of pressure had been released.  I could look inside, and my ulna and radius looked like small steel bars with a few veins wrapped around them...  I kept wondering how I was going to make my arm close back up and look "normal" again.
In the meantime, my sister was screaming as the five lizards crawled out of my arm and all five expanded to the size of a six-foot-long alligator.  They all had grey-green skin, with a pale underbelly, clawed and toed feet, and that weird mane of moving tentacles.  I somehow knew that the manes were poisonous, and I warned my sister not to let them touch her.  She finally ran like mad for the front door of her house.  I was trying to figure out how to wrap the skin back around my arm, when I heard a big hiss - just like gators make.  I slowly turned and looked at the first lizard to emerge, and... Lyra, the cat walked across me and I awoke.   Weird.  Really weird.

"Who Am I?" Dreams

I had a wild night of extremely frightening and chaotic dreams Sunday into Monday.  I was awake for more than five hours yesterday before I felt comfortable with myself.  When I awoke yesterday morning to get up and do my daily chores, I was convinced that I needed to have a tattoo placed on my body (where I could read it) stating my name, date of birth and Social Security number...  That's how strong and vivid my dreams had been.
Now, if I look at what I ate, and what I watched, looked at and read from supper until lights out, I might be able to find a culprit; if you believe that what you eat and see makes an impression on your dreams.  For Sunday night supper, I was watching James Spader and Kurt Russell in Star Gate, and I ate a couple of beef hot dogs with baked beans.  A couple hours later, while looking at photos of the Earp brothers and Bat Masterson, I had a piece of lime pound cake.  Then I looked at historical photos from Dodge City, Kansas - including a photo of a trader who had been shot and scalped by Native Americans.  I read a few chapters in Donna Andrews' Lord of the Wings, had a handful of regular gummy bears and went to bed.  (An awful diet, I know....)
I had multiple dreams from midnight until 6 a.m., and when I awoke from a nasty dream, and went back to sleep, I always had another dream that had the same features.  I was lost.  I didn't know my name or my history.  I knew that if other people discovered this information, I'd be "locked up."  At one point in a dream, I had taken my Mom somewhere, we had gotten separated, and I lost her - I was searching for her like mad, but I couldn't tell anyone her name, or my name, because I didn't know them.  In another dream, I had taken my granddaughter out to exchange a pair of shoes that were too large for her.  In the dream, the shoes were hot pink, and were a size 6, when they should have been a size 3.  My granddaughter wanted to carry the white plastic bag that the shoes had arrived in, and I let.  Then she disappeared and I didn't know which little girl  was my granddaughter, and I knew that if I stopped every girl with a white bag and asked to look inside it, I'd draw attention.  Since I didn't know my own name, or the name of my granddaughter, or even where either of us lived, I didn't want to get noticed.  So I wandered aimlessly.   At one point in time, in another dream, I was inside a huge hospital complex, and was eating left-over food from hospital trays, and sleeping in waiting rooms - because I knew I'd be "locked up" if anyone found out that I didn't know who I was.  These dreams were vivid and extremely disturbing....
I don't know what caused them, but I really don't want them to return.  Nightmares.  Blech.

Silly Lottery Daydreams

I saw Sunday morning that no one had won the Power Ball lottery the night before, and that the estimated prize would be $400 million for tonight's drawing.  With the media attention, the prize has grown even more, so now the estimate is $450 million - and sales will continue until late this afternoon.  It's stupid, but I only purchase lottery chances when the prize amount is larger than $300 million - I also know that the higher the prize, the more tickets are sold, which decreases the chances of  my winning chances immensely.  But I know that I spend less than $25 per year on lottery tickets, so I look upon it as a small donation to education here in Colorado.... and not that I'm "throwing my money away" as some people claim.   I know that my chances of having a winning ticket are infinitesimal, but it's me betting on my own luck, so I really don't care.
What would I do if I actually won the lottery?  I'd hire a tax and financial lawyer first.  Then I'd contact several financial consultants.  I would love to give large amounts of money to friends and family that they would not have to pay taxes on; I'd prepay it, if possible.  There would be grants and scholarships to put into place.  There are several donations that I would set up for annual dispersal.  I'd buy a house on Chincoteague.  I'd buy a car.  I'd get a new state-of-the-art PC system, and a new camera with a zoom lens.  I make sure that books were available to all kids who wanted them.
Silly daydreams, I know...  However, a person without dreams is a person without hope.  I have hopes and dreams.  I am a survivor.  Baji-naji.

Vivid Dreams

Two of the medications I take daily are known to cause vivid dreams, add a few more drugs for my bronchitis, and I have wildly strange and vivid dreams.  The other morning, I dreamed I was riding the local bus, and Rich, one of my favorite drivers, was in charge.  After a few minutes, I realized that we were not stopping to pick anyone up, and that if someone pulled the "Stop Request" cord, the bus continued on at the same pace.  Rich did check in his mirrors to see who rang, but he continued driving the route without stopping.  I asked him what was up, and he told me that we, the passengers, had to eat our way through the windows in order to leave.  Once we had eaten an opening large enough for our bodies to go through, he would slow the bus down at the stop we requested, and we'd have to jump out through the hole we'd made with our tongues and teeth.  That upset me, and I said it was a long way to the ground from the bus window.  Rich told me to "use my eyes" - didn't I see that there were enormous marshmallows set out at each stop?  Those were for the passengers to land on, safely. I'm not quite sure what awakened me after that, but I know that both Beatrice and I were licking the bus windows, and trying to gnaw on them, so we could escape the bus....   Weird.
I also dreamed that I was the bridesmaid for a friend's wedding.  I don't know who the friend was, because I couldn't see her face clearly, and her voice was being synthesized.  I was to be the only bridesmaid (or matron, actually).  The friend told me I could wear any dress or skirt and blouse that she approved, but I couldn't wear jeans.  In the dream, it took months to find the "right" outfit, according to her.  Then she wanted me to wear stiletto heels, which caused me to laugh uproariously. I told her nothing over 1 3/4 inch in heel height, or she would have to pay my hospital and counseling bills.  We finally found a pair of low heels that I could walk in...  Then I was to meet the groom - for some reason, I hadn't yet done so.  And the way he was introduced to me really got me nervous - my friend and I were sitting on a sofa in a dimly lit room.  The man walked into the room, and, as he drew near, a spot light first flashed onto his feet, then slowly made it's way up the man's body, until it arrived at his face.  My first thought was, "My gosh, he walks like John Wayne."   My second thought was his pants were too tight for a man of his age - which I guessed to be about my own....  My third thought was, "Why is he wearing a silk shirt, open to his navel?  Is he trying to be Errol Flynn?"  Then I thought, "No chest hair? - But wait, he's my friend's groom-to-be, not mine...."  Then I almost screamed.  His head became visible - he had the features of Vladimir Putin and the hair of Donald Trump.  I woke up immediately.  I'm not sure whether to classify the last dream as a "funny/odd" dream, or as a nightmare.

Friday on the Mall

Yesterday tired me out, but I had a wonderful time.  After walking Rosie, and having an unexpected chat with Alexy, I came home and called Beatrice.  She wanted to know where I was - and I said I had just returned home from walking Rosie. She was already at Turley's, having coffee, and trying to figure out why I hadn't been at home when she called earlier...  Oh, well...  We laughed, I called a cab, and we met at Turley's for a wonderful filling brunch - and they had freshly baked raspberry muffins, so I purchased two to take home with me.  I had actually planned on returning home, but Bea asked, "So, what shall we do for the rest of the afternoon?"  Since neither of us had shopped on the Pearl Street Mall in several years, we decided to "walk the Mall", and started out at 20th Street, headed west....  We wandered through book stores, jewelry stores, art stores, antique stores, second-hand and surplus stores, candy stores and bakeries, and a Fair Trade store.  There were several stores that completely entranced us.  I had a wonderful time in an old-fashioned candy and soda shop, but they were blasting Tennessee blue-grass gospel through their speakers, and Bea didn't like it.  (I was singing the chorus....)   We purchased drinks from a street vendor when we turned around at 6th Street and started heading  back east, up the other side of the Mall.  Most of the clothing shops didn't carry anything larger than a size 10, so Beatrice and I didn't even bother going inside, but we certainly critiqued the display windows.  We decided to take a seat on the benches in the sunshine close to the Peppercorn store - but once we were comfortable, a "street performer" decided to target us with her "singing."  I put those words in quotation marks for a reason - the woman could not carry a tune, her only accompaniment was a battered and odoriferous tambourine, and she knew only two verses and part of a refrain of one song.  She needed a bath, and her clothes needed washing.  It was a stomach-turning experience.  We spent almost an hour inside Peppercorn's and saw less than half of their merchandise...  and we both saw things that we wanted to purchase.
When we arrived back at the apartments, the service dog and his owner were playing in the back yard, so I drew my curtains and the kits and I went to bed.  I read until I fell asleep - and I had odd dreams last night. I dreamed that my Dad was teaching me how to tickle fish in a stream; and that I was riding Mauda LuAnn in a Pony Penning Round-up; and that I was a sailor on a fully-rigged tall ship - with three large masts, plus the forecastle....  Definitely strange all the way around.  Today is grey and cloudy, and the weather folks are saying we'll have rain and/or snow again this evening...  We'll see.  Lovey and Nedi have been able to run in and out since 6:30 this morning; Lovey has spent half of that time inside with me, while Nedi has just wandered back inside. Bob has wandered over, come inside, and helped himself to kitty kibble; he's left, now.
And I will be rooting for my Gators during the Final Four NCAA basketball games tonight.  I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

A Drink, Therapy, and Dreams

Oh, dear....  I've found another beverage that I like - and it's from Starbuck's.  I tried their Cool Lime Refresher today, made with a slice of lime, lime juice, and "green coffee extract."  I certainly got more of a caffeine buzz from half of this drink than I get from 12 ounces of Coca-Cola.  It certainly is an 'energizer' type of drink - and it tastes wonderfully delicious, too.  (I had been prowling the aisles of Safeway, looking for something for lunch and/or supper, when I heard my friend Patrick announce that Starbuck's was having a special on this new drink.  Ummm-ummm...  Glad I wandered over to the kiosk and surprised Patrick and Joy by actually ordering something!
Lovey would not leave me alone when I returned home yesterday.  She had to be the center of my attention at all times, while Nedi was happy getting a little bit of love, leaving, and then getting more love.  Lovey slept on my chest last night - I wonder if she thinks her 11 pounds can keep me pinned to the mattress?  This morning I saw my therapist, and we laughed a lot.  We both were pointing fingers at each other and declaring that what the other had said wasn't "proper."  But that's OK - it's the second time in 8 years of visits that I actually felt good.  So we had a very pleasant session.
I laughed and told her how I had purchased two PowerBall tickets for the $327 million prize, and then, knowing the odds were trillions to one of me winning, I looked at properties for sale on Chincoteague.  I decided that I wanted to buy 6 different houses and a 26-acre plot of land, and become a beach cottage landlord-mogul.  There was one house I would live in, one I would keep for friends and visitors, and I'd lease the other 4 out during the summer boom.  What a laugh.  At least I spent only $4 on the two tickets, and I won $12...  even though it would have been nice to go back to the island with some real money....
I'm continuing to walk the red kids, and on Saturday, I start attending Ooch twice a day; then on the first, I move in with Skipper for the Labor Day weekend.  Should be quiet, but interesting, and I hope the family leaves me with the use of a car...  they live a mile from the closest bus stop - but I can walk it with no problem - it's just nice to have the convenience of wheels.  I haven't yet looked up all of my football teams schedules, and printed them out; that's the only item on my "to do list" today.  Then I can decide who I'll try to watch, and when.  With five college teams and three pro teams to watch, it might get pretty hectic this fall...  Maybe, even, exciting?

A Very Strange Dream

Like a nut, I left the book I was reading, and my alarm clock, at Sammie and Tuppurr's yesterday.  I'll pick them up this afternoon.  Since I didn't have my alarm clock, I was worried about waking up on time to get over and walk Rosie and Remy before it got too warm.  Luckily, I awakened at 6:30 due to a dream - and what a dream!  If you read this blog frequently, you know that I am a big fan of  NCIS; most notably David McCallum and Mark Harmon.  But the next person in line is Rocky Carroll, who plays NCIS Director Leon Vance.  The reason I went on an NCIS tangent is because I watched it last night.  This morning, for whatever reasons, I dreamed:  I was sitting on a toilet in a large and very ornate bathroom (I have no idea what I was doing on the pot).  There was a large collection of old and new stand-alone toilet paper holders standing in the bathtub and in the glassed-in shower area.  Director Vance was sitting at a large desk in front of a huge mirror about 5 feet away.  His back was toward me and he was doing some paperwork.  I made some kind of laughing comment about the TP holder collection, and he smiled at me, over his shoulder, and made some type of funny comeback.  He turned back to his desk, and the phone rang.   It was an old empress style telephone made of brass and ivory, and it was sitting next to the toilet (and me). He tossed over his shoulder, "Hey, can you grab that for me?", so I answered the phone with a very quiet "Hello?"  The person on the other end of the line said he needed to speak to the Director.  I began feverishly to grab at toilet paper, so I could move out of the way - after mopping up from whatever I was doing...  I suddenly realized that I was panting aloud, and had what looked to be a five-inch stack of accordioned TP in my hand.  Then I realized the Director was looking at me with raised eyebrows.  He finally asked, "What?"  I replied, in a strangled whisper, "You have a phone call."  He stood, said, "Well, I'll answer it in the other room," and walked through the door.  I looked back at all the TP in  my hand.  He closed the door....  and I woke up.  - Weird!

Other oddments:  A woman in Centreville, Maryland has been charged with 133 counts of cruelty and inhumane treatment of animals.  She had a 200-acre Arabian breeding farm (Polish bloodlines), and investigators found the horses dying from starvation and dehydration last April.  ....  Two full grown mountain lions wandered into an outer suburb of Los Angeles yesterday, and freaked out a home owner and his neighbors.  Authorities believe the cats came down from the San Gabriel Mountains for the hunting of easier game.  ....  Another person has been bitten by a coyote in Broomfield.  Idiot people feed them and then are upset when they attack because they aren't being fed as they are used to.  ....  The manager of the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge has requested funds to restore the parking places lost by the waters of Hurricane Irene.  She hopes to replot and have a full set of over 900 parking spaces by early summer.  (But don't expect to see folks working on it now - it's time for the winter and spring nor'easters, and they would just wash all the work away again.)

Lightning Storm

After blogging last night, I moved into the kitchen and started my prep work for the Berry Uglies.  Then several more lightning storms came through the area - I had had the TV on, as She Wore a Yellow Ribbon was playing. The power began to go on and off - and I had to laugh because of the bits and pieces of song and dialogue that I heard from the movie.  As the lightning was so erratic, along with the power outages, and the storms continued in waves for several hours, I had to give up the plan of baking the BUs last night. Even though I had, by that time, turned the TV off, it kept turning itself back on for a few minutes - thanks to the electrical charges in the air, I guess.
When I finally fell asleep, having run out in between storms to take Lucy out, and then visit Brandi, I had really strange dreams.  I dreamed I was walking about a town, and I knew who I was, but had no idea where the town was - and they didn't speak any language that I could recognize.  Then, in a couple of dreams, I was in very familiar places, but didn't know who I was.  Then, in another dream, I was in the passenger seat of a car, and was with four librarians - we started to go down a hill (like one sees on a roller coaster), and the driver told me to hold on - and the vehicle did a loop-the-loop...  In the dream, I lost my lunch....  After that dream, I seemed to be in places I recognized, but it was as if all the usual physical properties of the universe could be broken - I know that I walked through several solid walls in one part of a dream.  After giving up on the baking, I did read a part of Dragonflight last night, but reading about Lessa and F'lar and Pern have never affected me in that way before....  Hmmmm. Is a puzzlement.

Festivals, Riding, Dreams

Folks are starting to show up in Boulder for the weekend's festivals. While walking this morning, I met folks who were here for the Bolder Boulder from Alabama, Michigan, Washington, Connecticut, and Nigeria. And a lot of vendors are already here for the Boulder Creek Festival, on top of our usual crowd for Saturday's Farmer's Market. I know that the Harvest House hotel behind me is really jumping - and someone was singing "Happy Birthday" at 5 a.m. this morning in the HH parking lot. I'll be heading over to walk the Rs in a few minutes, and then I'll spend a couple of hours with them Saturday night, while the family is out for dinner and the theatre in Denver. ** And I forgot to mention in yesterday's blog that the half-price dog adoption offer is good through May 31 at the Boulder Valley Humane Society. **
The sun has been playing hide-n-seek this morning with the clouds. The kits are sunning on the concrete patio, and it's already 60 degrees out. I know that the weather here, in this little valley nestled up against the eastern flank of the Rockies, is hard to predict; yesterday, the western views were ever changing. When I was out walking, early, I could see the Indian Peaks clearly, with a few rocky ridges poking through the snow; the Flatirons were clear and crisp. When I left to walk the Irish kids at 9, the clouds had gathered and the Flatirons were invisible (let alone the Indian Peaks, 30 miles away), as were the nearest foothills. At noon, the Flatirons were visible, but the mountains directly behind them were being hugged by clouds. Throughout the afternoon, the clouds dropped and rose in height, so the vista was always different. - That's Colorado.
This is so silly - my horseback ride is almost 2 weeks away, but I'm excited. Where am I planning to ride? The business is Sombrero Ranch, and the place I want to ride is at their Allenspark location. If you're interested, you can see their website at: http://www.sombrero.com/ ; they offer all sorts of riding packages, hunting, camping and fishing packages, and just plain riding horse (or pack horse) rentals for the entire summer. If I had a place to keep it, I'd rent a horse for the summer! Gimme, gimme! I'm just like a little kid in a candy shop with an insatiable sweet tooth!
Got ten new books to read from the public library. I think I'm going to have to stop reading about Native Americans for a little bit - this morning, I was dreaming about being with the family tribe and being caught in a tremendous storm that started out as sand, and changed to snow. I awoke with a jerk, and Lovey meowed at me, and my response, without thinking, was , "At least we didn't have to eat the horses." Then I went back to sleep and starting dreaming about the Dineh (the Navajo) and the Yorbis (alien natives) on a world that Andre Norton created many years ago - and some Metis joined us and started up a fiddle competition.... Maybe it's a good thing that I visit my shrink on Tuesday!
Have a super weekend!!

An Odd Awakening

I have to admit that I slept most of Friday - other than walking the red kids and watching Jeopardy!, I read and slept all day and all night. Both Lovey and Nedi slept with me, and they both jumped up, startled, at 1 a.m. this morning - that woke me up. There was someone standing at the edge of the patio, shining a flashlight around the patio and toward the windows. Nedi hid under the bed; Lovey went to the cat tree to take a better look at the intruder; I put on my glasses, decided it was a human with a light, and as I sat up, coughed. When I coughed, the light outside turned off and I heard footsteps in the leaves close to the patio edge. I peeked out my window, and made sure that my chairs, Green Man, and new satellite dish were still in place. Then I just went back to bed. If I am awakened again tonight, I'll call the police to report it. Yesterday's Free Feline Friday was a success - 45 of 58 cats and kittens found new homes. Other than a 6-month-old kitten, all the remaining cats are between the ages of 2 and 12 years. If I had the room, I'd adopt one; but two cats and me in 500 square feet is more than enough - that's why my kits get to run outside when I'm at home. ... Being silly, I'm going to buy a couple of lottery tickets for tonight's drawing - it's $187 million. You can't win if you don't play. ;-) ... Just dreaming, of course, but if I won, I'd purchase a condo here in Boulder, a condo in Gainesville (Florida), a condo in Vero Beach, and a house and/or condo on Chincoteague. I would definitely be a conspicuous consumer in that aspect of things. I'm not sure what I'd get for a vehicle - possibly an Audi, possibly a Toyota. But the kits and I would just drift from place to place, as the mood took us - I am so happy that Nedi and Lovey love to travel! And, of course, these are only pipe dreams...

Lottery Dreaming

The Rs are on the way to the groomer's this morning, so I'll be exercising them this afternoon. Ooch is full of love and has spent several hours in my lap yesterday and today - he feels so frail: just bones under long, matted knots of hair. He'll let me groom him for 30 minutes, but that's his limit and I won't exceed it. Being twenty has its privileges, you know. Lovey and Banichi were upset when I left earlier than usual this morning, as they didn't get to go out and play; but they'll have an open door as soon as I get home, plus when I return from the Rs' walk later. I'm reading my last library book of 11 - it's James Lee Burke's take on Hurricane Katrina. I awoke around 4 this morning thinking that I could hear waves lapping against my window - of course it was only a dream. (And Lovey is a Katrina survivor.)
Speaking of dreaming, if I won the lottery (extremely low, next to nil, chance, I know!), I would like to buy my grandparents or great-grandparents house on Chincoteague Island - the originals are still standing, and I would love to own a piece of family history. Here in Boulder, my idea of the perfect home would be Alexy's - lots of windows and sun, and a huge backyard full of flowers, birds, squirrels, fox, and deer (and with a large patio, partially covered, from which one can view almost any type of wildlife). In Gainesville, I'd probably go with a townhouse or condo - but only if my cats are allowed. - I know, I'm blathering on about an impossibility.... But it's nice to have dreams....
I loved the colt Dixieland Band when he raced. I was impressed by his record as a sire - 117 Stakes winners - and I mourn him today. He was put down due to the infirmities of old age, at the age of 30, yesterday. He was a son of Northern Dancer and Mississippi Mud. He was a stupendous-looking bay and a great sire. He will be missed. ... I'll probably watch the Rockies' first home game on TV tomorrow, as I don't have anything better to do. I will be walking the Rs during the weekend, as their human grandparents are due in today, and we're hoping that my walks will keep the big, foolish, loving Irish Setters from knocking down anyone of the elder generation. (Rosie and Remy just get so excited and happy to see people....!) And I'll be getting used to my new Windows 7 system in my new hard drive... it should prove interesting!!

Dreaming of Mauda, Again....

It feels a little chilly out this morning - it's in the low 50s, but the wind is coming from the north at a steady 20 mph, with gusts up to 40. Traveling up to Estes Park tomorrow, we might see some "fall color", but the peak of the season is supposed to be a week away. With tomorrow's highs only in the 50s at Estes Park, I somehow believe that the peak may arrive a little earlier than the forecasters think. I saw both skunks last night - it was like watching a couple of receivers do a bump and run down field together. They were awfully cute. Walt and Sophie and I had a peaceful walk yesterday; we saw a lot of squirrels and cottontails, but no raccoons (thankfully). And I had very wild and crazy dreams last night, which I am claiming came from the bottle of Mountain Dew I had yesterday evening. I had a strange dream wherein my favorite actor met me and called me his "little mustard seed." I dreamt that I was on board the Royal Charles as she sailed from The Hague to Dover in 1660, and saw and conversed with King Charles and the Duke of York. (Now, I know that one came from reading The Plot Against Pepys... Which was excellent, by the way.) And I again dreamed I was riding Mauda LuAnn through a dreamscape that she and I have gone through thousands of times in my sleep - her coat is glossy, her hooves gleam from a touch of oil, and I am riding her without bridle or saddle, since we think and move as one....

To more mundane things - I am really beginning to believe that if I am rooting for a particular person on a particular sports team, then it's the kiss of death for that player. Last year, my three favorite defensive players were injured in the first two games, and two of those three were "let go" this season. Last night, watching the game, one of my favorite players injured his knee and will be out for 3 to 6 weeks, at a guess; if it's worse than they think, it might be the whole season. And one of my favorite baseball players was injured this week as well. Am I a jinx? - I'll let you know on Monday, after the weekend games are finished. ... This area is having an outbreak of Leptospirosis - a disease of worldwide significance that infects both animals and humans. The scientific name of the infecting organism is Leptospira interrogans sensu lato. Within this species there are many different strains (serovars). Of these different strains there are eight that are of importance for dogs and cats. These different strains produce different levels and types of disease depending on the animals they infect. While cats can be infected, they rarely show signs of disease. The disease is much more of a problem in dogs, people, and livestock. There are vaccines available, but usually only for one or two of the more common strains. Unfortunately, vaccination against one strain does not protect against the other strains. The current canine vaccines protect against the serovars canicola and icterohaemorrhagiae. These two serovars have been decreasing in total number of infections, but unfortunately, other serovars that infect dogs such as grippotyphosa, pomona, and bratislava have increased. Local vets are suggesting that concerned pet owners have their critters inoculated, which consists of a series of two or three shots, 2 weeks apart. Leptospirosis is transmitted between animals through contact with infected urine; venereal and placental transfer; bite wounds; or the ingestion of infected tissue. In acute infections a fever of 103-104°, shivering, and muscle tenderness are the first signs. Then vomiting and rapid dehydration may develop. Severely infected dogs may develop hypothermia and become depressed and die before kidney or liver failure has a chance to develop. In lesser infections, the animal usually develops a fever, anorexia, vomiting, dehydration, and increased thirst. The dog may be reluctant to move due to muscle or kidney pain. Animals with liver involvement may develop icterus. Dogs that develop kidney or liver involvement may begin to show improvement in organ function after 2 to 3 weeks or they may develop chronic renal failure. Please protect your pets! ... And I get to sleep with my kits tonight! It will depend upon how much they allow me to sleep/rest during the night as to whether or not I blog before leaving for the Scottish Festival tomorrow.

CU Football; a Dream

Well. It was an exciting night here in Boulder - CU Buffaloes against the West Virginia Montaineers. Tied at the end of the fourth quarter; WV got the ball first in over time - ran it down the field (thanks to Noel Devine, who is no relation); kicked a field goal - and it bounced back after hitting the left upright. Buffs got the ball, made a field goal, and won, 17-14. Partying was still going on at 3 this morning. My sister had parked in my space, here at the apartment building, and gone to work; she was asked to work extra, so she got to my place just as everyone was leaving the game. So she ended up in here, eating Oreos, while waiting for the traffic to clear so she could just get out of the parking lot. CU has had a pretty lousy football program for at least the past 10 years, so with a 3-0 record, and with the Mountaineers having been a nationally-ranked team, the students are very happy at the moment.

Folks are working on cleaning up the backyard after it's use last night as a parking lot and tail-gating area. Even though the patio door is open, my kits have retreated inside to avoid the unknown people and their rattling trash cans on wheels. One car is still left in the backyard - I don't know if the driver has forgotten where it's parked, or partied too hard after the game and has not yet awoken. I took a walk around and through the campus this morning - while the campus is working on a making ball games a "Zero Waste" event, it's evident that it's not a zero-waste event elsewhere. Saw lots of trash, lots and lots of beer cans and bottles, and lots of yucky vomit patches all over the sidewalks. Yuck. After the next home game I will walk in a very different direction!

I had the weirdest dream this morning - I was travelling on foot with three cats, and a war had been declared; vehicles full of gas/diesel were being flung by giant siege machines, and the cats and I were constantly in fear of having a vehicle either land on us, or being knocked down by the concussive forces of the explosions. And with all the noise and explosions, I could still hear the kits meow at me, and they could hear me talking to them....
