Well, I didn't do very well in picking the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes yesterday. But I didn't entirely wipe out, either. Longshot Keen Pauline went to the lead early in the race and stayed there. Include Betty was running last for most of the race, then came roaring up in the stretch to finish second. Ahh Chocolate finished in third, after running in fifth place for the majority of the race. Danessa Deluxe managed to get fourth. Keen Pauline paid $32.80 for a $2 win bet; Include Betty paid $5.40 for a $2 place bet; and Ahh Chocolate paid $4.40 for a $2 show bet. The $2 perfecta paid $211; the $2 trifecta paid $1,356; and the $2 superfecta paid $3,253.80.
The NBC Sports Network will show live Preakness day races, the NBC will take over, then after-race coverage will be by NBC Sports again. There are eight horses contesting the Preakness Stakes today; all are three-year-olds, all carry 126 pounds over the one mile and three sixteenths. The purse is worth $1.5 million. Five of the eight entries ran in the Kentucky Derby, and they will be facing fresh opponents, who did not race two weeks ago. Here are a list of post positions, horse's name, finish place in the Kentucky Derby, jockey, morning line betting odds and sire:

It would be great to have a Triple Crown champion this year - but can American Pharoah win from the first post position, and with Dortmund in the second slot? Will D Wayne Lukas surprise us with Mr. Z? How much did the Kentucky Derby take out of the five colts? My feelings (which are much good any more) are: Badhisattva in first; Firing Line in second; and Divining Rod in third. - But then, of course, American Pharoah might be able to "Wow!" all of us.

Black-Eyed Susan Stakes
Nine fillies will try to win the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes at Old Hilltop today. NBC Sports Networks will have live coverage of the race. The 3-year-old fillies will run one and one-eighth miles, for a purse of $500,000. Seven of the fillies will carry 116 pounds; as Graded Stakes winners, Include Betty will carry 122 pounds, and Devine Aida will have 120 pounds. The two fillies who competed in the Kentucky Oaks, two weeks ago were Include Betty and Luminance. All of the fillies were bred in Kentucky. There are four bays, four chestnuts, and one grey/roan entered. Today I'm listing the Post Position, filly's name, coat color, starting betting odds, and the name of the filly's sire:

Realistically, I think the order of finish will be: Ahh Chocolate, Luminance, and Danessa Deluxe (if she doesn't get boxed in).

My Kentucky Oaks Predictions
The Kentucky Oaks will be shown live on NBC Sports Network on Friday, 1 May, at 5:49 (Eastern Daylight Savings Time). The race's purse is worth $1 million, the distance covered by the three-year-old fillies is one and one-eighth miles, and the girls will each carry 121 pounds. The winner of the race will take home $600,000. There are fourteen entries in the race, plus one alternate, in case of a scratch. All of the fillies were bred in Kentucky, except Stellar Wind, the betting favorite, who was born in Virginia, and the alternate entry, Peace and War, who is a Florida-bred. If you look at coat colors, Shook Up and Oceanwave are greys (or roans), and there are three chestnuts - Include Betty, I'm a Chatterbox, and Stellar Wind- the rest of the field is bay or dark bay/brown.
Mike Battaglia set the betting odds as follows: his favorite is Stellar Wind, who had the most qualifying points, at 7 to 2 odds; he has two fillies at 4 to 1 odds, Condo Commando and I'm a Chatterbox; Lovely Maria is listed at 5 to 1; and Birdatthewire is at 6 to 1. Mike has two 15 to 1 shots picked, Forever Unbridled, breaking from the inside post, and Puca, who starts on the outside. The other fillies are listed at odds between 20 and 50 to 1. I have my own favorite bloodlines that I bet on, and was stymied by the fact that all the entries, except Shook Up, have at least three of my favorite sires in their pedigrees. Yesterday's last blog listed the post positions, jockeys, and betting odds for this race.
I still think that Condo Commando will take the race by a nose over Stellar Wind. Neither of these fillies has raced on the Churchill Downs track, though, and some horses just don't like it. My dream finish would be Forever Unbridled in first, Oceanwave in second, Include Betty in third, and Puca in fourth. Horse racing is horse racing - there are so many possibilities that it boggles the mind. No matter how much you study past races, bloodlines, jockeys and trainers, and the horses themselves, it's always a crap shoot. Racing luck, weather, how the horse feels, what the atmosphere is like (in both senses), whether the horse "likes" the track and the crowd should always be factored in for any race analysis... And that's what makes picking a winner on any given day for any particular race such a fantastic feeling. I don't bet much - but I certainly love to win!

My Picks for Saturday's Breeders Cup Races
Saturday's first Breeders Cup race is the Juvenile Fillies; twelve two-year-old girls will carry 122 pounds for a mile and 1/16 on the main dirt track. All of the fillies were bred in Kentucky, except Wonder Gal, who is New York-bred. Four of the fillies are chestnuts, the rest are bays. Three of the fillies - Feathered, Danette, and Puca - are descendants of Hyperion. I was able to view half of the field in photos. Based on pedigree and available photos, my picks are: Take Charge Brandi (trained by D Wayne Lukas), Majestic Presence, Puca, Wonder Gal (under Mike Smith) and By the Moon...
All entries in the Filly & Mare Turf are four years or older, so all will carry 124 pounds in the mile and 1/4 race worth $2 million. There is one 6-year-old mare, Abaco, five 5-year-olds, and four 4-yesr-olds in the race. Two are Irish-bred - Just the Judge and Fiesolana - and two were bred in Great Britain - Secret Gesture and Dank, the defending champion. Dayatthespa was bred in New York, Irish Mission was bred in Ontario, Canada, Parranda was bred in Florida, and the other four entries are Kentucky bred. Four of the eleven are related to Hyperion. Honestly, I love the way that each of these ladies look. I really like the looks and breeding of Toronado, but he's the early betting favorite - so here are my picks: Veda, the 3-year-old French filly; Anodin, the brother of Goldikova; Summer Front; Tourist under the guidance of Rosie Napravnik; and Karakontie, the Japan-born grandson of Sunday Silence.
The early betting favorite for the $5 million Classic is Shared Belief, a 3-year-old dark brown gelding, who won the Breeders Cup Juvenile last year. He looks impressive, has a Cryptoclearance and Northern Dancer pedigree, and will have Mike Smith in the saddle. I'd like for him to win, but I like longer shots on the tote board. There is a full field of fourteen horses; 7 of them are 3-year-olds and will carry 122 pounds; the other seven entries are aged four to six, and will carry 126 pounds. California Chrome has not been in the winner's circle since the Preakness in May; he is the only California bred and carries 122 pounds. Zivo is a 5-year-old bay horse bred in New York; all other entries were bred in Kentucky. All of the horses are bays, except California Chrome and V. E. Day, who are chestnuts. The other five youngsters getting a 4 pound weight break are: V. E. Day, Bayern, Toast of New York, Tonalist, and Candy Boy.Since Shared Belief is the betting favorite, my picks are: Prayer for Relief, Toast of New York, Candy Boy under Corey Nakatani, Majestic Harbor with Tyler Baze in the irons, and Moreno with Javier Castellano up.
