A New Foal - And Other Foals

First, foal 49 has joined us - Kachina and Hoppy have produced what looks to be a buckskin baby.  Seen from a distance, and not seen clearly, so sex is definitely unknown.  Baby spotted this morning, 30 May...

Foal 48 is a filly, the daughter of A Splash of Freckles and Legacy:

And, today's "bonus" is a series of photos of two foals sired by Wild, playing together...  They are both bay pintos. -  The colt (# 9) is a darker base color, out of Summer's Gentle Sea Breeze, and was born on 20 April.  The filly (#13) is lighter in color and has a splash of white on her neck; she is out of Tuleta Star, and was born on 27 April.  -  She's leading in the first photo; he's leading in the second...

New Foal on Assateague in Maryland

While doing their census of ponies on Assateague Island in Maryland a week or so ago, the National park Service discovered a new baby in the stallion Chestnut's band.  The dam is Shasta, and the filly's estimated birth date is 16 November - here are a few photos of the dam and foal...

It looks like she has a small triangle of white on her left elbow, also.

After the recent announcement of deaths on the Maryland end of Assateague, I'm very happy to announce the birth of a new foal.  His dam is Giggles (N9BM-J), a chestnut mare born 21 Oct 2011 to Fonzi and Princess; this is her second foal, her first being a chestnut colt  sired by Joy, and nicknamed "Happy."  The proud new father - it's his first foal - is Bodacious Bob (M6MSY), who was born 16 July 2000, to Bolt and mom Rosie. The new boy, given the identification number N9BM-JQ, was born early Friday morning, 17 July.  He is a striking bay pinto.

New Foal and Wildlife

I'm starting to get my horse and pony motors revved up again.  We're 8 weeks away from the running of the 2016 Kentucky Derby, and, last weekend, the first Chincoteague pony foal born on the Virginia end of Assateague Island.  The mare is Tunie, and she has a bay pinto baby.  Darcy Cole is the photographer who tracked them down....  She states the sire is "Hoppy," a bay.  I don't know if she's referring to Little Dolphin, or Effie's Papa Bear….   Darcy calls Effie's Papa Bear "Hoppy."

There are three expectant mares on the Maryland (Northern) end of the island.  Apparently these three did not lose their estrus cycles when darted with their annual birth control medication...

   The birds and other critters are getting the feeling that it's really Spring here in Boulder.  The mating displays can be breath-taking, even when I'm just sitting in the back yard.  Flights, plumage displays, and dancing are very common; and the squirrels are running in patterns only they can see up, down, and around tree trunks.  I stopped the car at 6:10 this morning on a normally busy street to watch three bucks, twelve does, and eight yearlings slowly walk across traffic.  

   I feel so lucky to be able to observe nature - one is not going to see a herd of mule deer crossing the street in any large city.  And, even though I frequently see elk, I am still surprised by their size and majesty.  Buffalo, or bison, are just amazing.  And I'm used to handling large horses, including draft horses and draft crosses - I guess it's because they are wild creatures.
