I'll Have Another Wins Derby

I can't believe it - I picked both the Oaks and the Kentucky Derby winners this year!  I'll Have Another became the first horse to ever win the Derby from post number 19.  The chestnut son of Flower Alley, out of Arch's Gal Edith, came from far back to pass Bodemeister just before the finish line.  A $2 win bet today paid back $32.60.  (Believe You Can, who won the Oaks yesterday, paid $29.60 for a $2 win ticket.)  Bodemeister was in the lead from the start of the race, and laid down incredibly fast times.  He just couldn't resist the inexorable drive of I'll Have Another.  Bodemeister finished second, Dullahan (under Kent Desormeaux) was third and Went The Day Well finished fourth.  The crowd on hand to see this year's 138th Run for the Roses was a record-breaking 165,307.
I'll Have Another is owned by J. Paul Reddam.  The trainer is Doug O'Neill, his first Derby; and the jockey was 25-year-old Mario Gutierrez, riding in his first Derby.  Union Rags, who received a lot of media attention, had a troubled start, was squeezed back, and then boxed in; he managed to finish in seventh place.  ....  More about the Kentucky Derby tomorrow.....
In the under card:  Shackleford, the chestnut colt who won last year's Preakness, won the Churchill Downs Stakes.  Daisy Devine finished fifth in the Distaff Turf Mile; she led most of the way, but was kept on the inner rail for the entire race, which was tiring for her, after the one-plus inch of rain that fell this morning.
